Showing a Basset hound? Tips welcome and a question!

Well as you probibily know my dad bought a Basset Hound, pick of the litter, well bred, and he wants to show her.
Unfortunately he has done his back in so kneeling down to stack her.. well he may not get back up! :rolleyes:
So he has asked me to show her. Obviously I want to do her justice but I have only every shown Labs and the odd GSD!
My question is where should the lead sit? Should it be loose around her neck like a lab, or should it be up behind her ears? Same for the running, where should the lead sit?
I have done the odd bit of standing with her but not too much I don't want her to go sour and have to drag her around!!
I have also decided not to bring treats in as she is a bit too food orientated and its a pet hate of mine when you are standing a dog holding its head and its trying to get the treat in your hand!
Any other tips will be more then welcome! She is cracking conformationally so I want to do her justice!

Look for some online videos/Youtube of Bassets in the ring.

I am experienced at showing labradors/GSD's but never shown a Basset hound! Its all new territory :D
 
Lead loose across the shoulder at an angle that shows off the dog.
Typically a chain is used.
Do not string on the move.
 
Probably an obvious one, but make sure she will happily stand on a table (I took my terriers to a show where a judge couldn't/wouldn't bend down to check teeth and so on and had all dogs under a height on a table. Mine freaked out and we were asked to leave :( ) And make sure she's cool with having fingers in her mouth and so on too :)
 
AS far as I know bassets are not a "table" breed,my goodness imagine trying to heave that great big dog onto a table,and surely very dodgey for their backs too.Looking at posed bassets it is a kneel down and pray job,finger under chin if need be,lead back just behind shoulder..to make the slope appear better,and prop up the stern gently into correct carriage. They are actually very big dogs,just with short legs.
 
Why don't you check out the Our Dogs and Dog World sites, they should be able to help.

PS: they look much nicer and more athletic (for a basset, lol!) if you can show them naturally rather than stacked

Bronwen the Basset (AKA Broom Broom basset :D) Went to her first show this weekend.
She was a star, stood like a rock for the judge to check teeth, go over her. The judge was also very complimentary and asked where we got her from so dad's ego was mahoosive!!
She ran well, with her nose on the floor like a hoover but she is only 6 months old.. and we were on grass :D
I showed her almost like a lab, with a nice loose lead around her neck/shoulders. I struggled getting her front legs underneath her properly as she is so short and those stumpy little legs are not easy to see :rolleyes:
Overall we are very please with her, she behaved better then the 2 year old lab who would not settle or let the judge near her.. :rolleyes:

P.s I think as pups they can be shown on a table.. but I opted against it as it would not be very elegant or good for her back for me to be hoiking her up onto the table, she is a substantial size already!
