Ive looked into showing my coblet in cob classes and was looking at the C.H.A.P.S qualifiers, slightly larger shows than the small fun day ones i usually do.
My only problem is that i usually just plait my cob but i know its not very acceptable to take a cob into a cob class with a mane or if he does have a mane it has to be a fully grown one. There is no way i can grow my coblets right out but im cringing at the idea of hogging him

Has anyone got a cob that they show that has an idea of the standards in cob classes and if having a plaited mane would stop me from reaching 1st place in a class?

You'd be at the botom o the line with a mane as its not a cob characteristic! He'd look lovely hogged, I adored my cobs mane being hogged, it was really smart, showed off her neck and was easy to maintain!

Has to be one of the other I'm afraid. You either need to bit the bullet and hog him (he's look lovely!) or let it grow out. And since his legs are clipped out he needs to be hogged.

I have a traditional coloured who is rising 3 and has the proper full length mane (shame his feathers don't match at present!).

It's now a good 6" longer than this and still growing strong. He'll be show traditional for the forseeable future.

Lovely horse! I think he'd look very handsome hogged, you'd have to take the forelock off aswell unfortunately but I'm sure you'd get used to it.

You'll also need to take about four inches off his tail, & pull the top of it. Clip him right out (legs too) 3 to 4 weeks before your first show.Heshouldn't go in to the ring at a larger show freshly clipped, but the coat does need to be short & even.

You could turn him out as a native and see how he does...
So a nice pulled neat mane, unplaited, let his feathers on his fetlocks grow out, but not up the leg.

Such as this pony here...

A lot of people don't realise there is a difference between a native and a traditional when it comes to coloureds, but the natives are less hairy, often more flashy/quality animals.

It may be worth a go. If he doesn't suit the type, you can always reconsider hogging him the year after, but at least it'd be something to try as you'd still be turning out correctly for that type.

Sashpip, lovely cob. Can I respectfully suggest you run a sliphead to the top rings ("snaffle") of your rugby pelham? It would just finish off the look.

I did post to ask about showing him...(never done it before) and people kindly suggested that and a few other things (like dropping his nose band a hole)

We took him out first time in just a snaffle (usual for him) and were told we needed him in a double for the next show, just added a second pair of reins to his existing bridle and a pelham...will have a new double bridle for this year - all in Brown I believe for correctness....I will get it right at some point

Can I ask how tall your cob is? Show cobs fall between 14.2 and 15.1, really 'fill the eye', and are usually at the upper limit sadly. There are not many showing at the lower limits except at local level sadly.
I have a 14.2 cob and we went hairy because of the height issue. She looks fab hogged out, but is just not big enough. However, hairy, it's another matter!

I think your cob would look fabulous hogged. I hogged mine a few years ago and wouldn't even contemplate growing his mane out now. IMO they look so much smarter with a hog and nice pulled trimmed tail and it saves so much time when you're preparing for a show. Its only a couple of minute job to get the clippers out and keep the hog smart too. Just think no more pulling manes!! Heaven!!

Here's my lad with his hog:

Our cob is 14.3hh (15.1hh on his passport...)
Why do they bother having a height range when its only the bigger ones that will win? We just go for the fun but my daughter would like a go at search for a star......

I also think he would look great hogged- my old cobby used to be hogged, they look so much smarter for it. If you're going to show him you will also need to take some length off of the tail and smarten it up a little. He has lovely markings for a coloured class though, I think you will do well with him.
