Hey! I'm planning on taking my little man showing soon! He's a lovely bay, 2 white socks at the front and 2 stockings at the back, a diamond on his forehead and one on his nose..
I however need to sort out his tail, bath and thin his mane (long ish and reeally thick :L ) [sorry can't get a picture at the moment]

Can anyone tell me exactly what the judges look for? He's not one of the lively ponies that will trot on the spot or pull the leader..
Should I show him in an in-hand bridle or a white halter? Do I paint his hooves or not? He has slight feather so do I take that off or leave it on?
Also, what do I need to wear?
Any other advice would be great as first time showing! Thanks in advance! :)

I used to work + show welsh D's so the same rules should apply to C's.
•Leave mane and tail natural.
•Tidy feathers up if necessary but cut no length off.
•One plait down behind the ear is optional.
•Wear tweed jacket if possible but navy/black is allowed.
White halters are traditionally worn but many people opt for the in hand bridle. You can oil hooves and chestnuts. If you rub sudocreme in the horses socks the night before then brush off in the morning then your horses socks will be very white!

Where as I would leave the feathers, tidy up the mane and tail (pull it to one length- not overly short or long! You have to decide what enhances him the best). Tail feathered to a point so it is carried at hock length IYSWIM.

Definite white halter- young stock and a gelding.

The single plait is personal preference.
As he is bay I would oil muzzle eyes and black points.
Chalk (never ever heard of sudocreme on feather, horrible sticky mess waiting to happen IMO) and brushed out before you go in the ring.

Best bet is look for pro pics of welsh young stock classes and copy the turnout of what won.

Best of luck :)

ETA- tweed or waistcoat or even just a smart shirt. Black/navy jacket would be completely out of place. Unless it is a fun local show. But even those welshy classes can have some seasoned pros in
