I am going to begin showing my Newfoundland in the new year and would love some tips and advice. What to wear and washing tips would be fantastic.

Welcome to the crazy world of breed shows
Firstly I would go to ringcraft classes if you are not already. These will teach you and your dog ring etiquette, how to stand and move your dog and get your dog experienced at being "gone over"
Other advice is to wear what you feel comfortable in especially shoes but you also need to complement your dog. Don't wear black trousers if your dog is black 😉 I tend to increase in smartness as the level of show increases. At fun shows anything goes, at open shows clean smart trousers and gilet, champ shows I wear a smart skirt and boots. For crufts I have a new tweed skirt and jacket after all I need to persuade the judge that mind is the best dog in the ring so I need to look my best too.
Always make showing fun for the dog and if they don't enjoy it then respect their wishes. Fortunately my flatcoats love showing and see it as s big party and social occasion. Hope this helps

I would say go to some open and champ shows and look at handlers in your breed, what are they wearing and maybe have a chat to them. Yes, go to ring craft classes! But bear in mind that each breed has a specific way of presenting their dog - for example a bull dog will be presented very differently than a poodle and a gun dog different again. Have someone assess your dog's gait and help you with whether a faster movement is better or if you need to slow it up a bit. Just because someone does it one way for their dog doesn't mean that you should do it that way for yours.

There is a good facebook page called Newbies to Showing which lots of things are addressed.

What satinblaze says is correct about attire - particularly for gun dogs. However in poodles we wouldn't wear tweed (which is a shame as I love it) but need something a bit more glitzy to go with the very nature of poodles. Instead you see a lot of women out in twinsets and sparkly shoes LOL
