So I've entered the boy into a local show - we'll be doing a Prelim and Best Riding Horse over 14.2. Lady said we'd have to do a small show and I said 'he'll do that alright!'

Anyway, I'm thinking white saddlecloth and plaited up for him (no boots) and for me, white jods, black show jacket, black hat and white shirt and stock.

Does that sound right and can I use that outfit for both classes?

PS, will I be frowned upon for using the attached saddlecloth http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/prodshow.asp?id=372&a=srch his bridle and saddle are black with gold clasps.....

I would use a numnah, not a saddle cloth. A plain white one or a black one.

You sound as if you will both look very smart. What kind of show will you be doing??? Airs above or on the ground???

it's just a local ponyclub show - should be good experience for him.....entered him as 'Park Ranger' though!!!

Asked if the judge would want to ride him in the 'riding horse' class and organiser said no. I said 'thank god for that' haa haa

But a saddlecloth will cover his big belly!

Haa haaaaaaaa - he's got a bit of a barrell belly though, and being an upside down horse it's all on the sides....would i get penalised for using a saddlecloth?

No, probably not at local level. It's just a numnah is more correct.

Either way you'll both look wonderful, and full disclosure in the form of photographic evidence will of course be mandatory!!!!!

Well of course!! I'm very excited! xx

you shouldnt really wear a numnah for any showing classes but for a local show you will probably be ok.Its difficult as at some local shows you get a really good turnout standard wise and at others its more relaxed- its all good experiecne thou! Good luck

for dressage the numnah/saddle cloth is fine, but for showing you want one that matches the colour of your saddle and cant bee seen much.

For a riding horse class you should wear, tweedjacket, shirt, tie, beige/canary jods and long black boots, oh and a navyhat and brown leather gloves are prefered as well.
This is also perfectly acceptable for dressage as well.

Oh dear - can't afford a completely separate outfit for the showing class unfortunately.

Can you not wear white jods and I'll buy a tweed jacket and tie?

if you want you can wear white jods, but they do tend to stick out a bit.

For the shirt just pop to asda they are only £5 (or nick your OH's ones) and charity shops are wonderful for ties for 50p.

I've got a stock shirt with a collar so that should be ok! x

shirt preferably cream/canary but white is perfectly acceptable (if you want cream, put a cheap asda shirt in with cheap asda yellow dusters, and there you have cream shirt)
Tweed preferably green or brown tweed that compliments you horse. I personaly think you cant go wrong with a green tweed

Will I get chucked out for wearing our dressage stuff in the showing class?

Really can't warrant all that money for a whole new wardrobe for dressage! Also can't afford a new hat....got a black velvet one.....god this showing malarky is a nightmare!

black hat will be ok for this level. shirt and tie please for the showing (they are not that expensive i paid the grand total of £5.60 for mine) and if you have to wear the black jacket, well its better then no jacket but a tweed would be prefered.

Got confused reading all the replies, so may be repeating everything here!

NO saddlecloth - discrete numnah if necessary in the shape of the saddle. We use numnahs on all our show horses in the ring but only use saddlecloths at home.
No stock - you will need a shirt and tie (although you can get away with the stock but it is really incorrect!)
White jods are really a total no no for showing. Any colour of beige/canary etc is fine, but again, if you don't want to spend the money, then white it is! Same with the black jacket and hat - maybe next time you purchase a replacement go for a navy hat which is infinitely more flattering for ladies!

To be honest, as long as you are smart, you will not get chucked out of the ring, it just depends how "correct" you want to be.

Hope you have a great day - pics are, of course, a must!!!

I'm in same situation - forked out last month for dressage outfit and now hoping to go showing this month but don't think my white lined bridle etc will be much use...

currently on look out for coloured browband and tie same colour, cream shirt, and cheap gaitors - borrowing a double bridle and pelham.... nightmare.....

You really shouldn't wear white jods for showing at any level.... if you can I would wear beige, cream or canary jods with a shirt and tie.

I wouldn't worry too much about your jacket and hat, given the level it doesn't really warrant splashing out, but you shouldn't wear a saddlecloth.... if you want to wear it for the dressage, just remove it and let him go naked for the showing class

Good luck

Sorry to butt in! But I am also in the process of buying dressage/showing outfits! I've always wondered about navy hats and tweed jackets, I take it this is correct for women anyway? Just thought it might look a bit odd, especially with black leather boots!!

The colour of jacket depends on the class you are doing, and whether it is an evening performance/Royal show etc.

But basically as follows (and these are REALLY rough guidelines)

Hacks, show ponies - coloured browbands, navy jackets, slightly finer bridle

Riding horses - coloured browbands, tweed jackets, more workmanlike bridle

Hunters, Show hunter ponies, working hunters, working hunter ponies - plain browbands, tweed jackets, workmanlike bridle

M&Ms - plain browbands, tweed jackets, plain bridle to suit the pony

All the above should also wear shirt and tie, brown gloves, black long boots or if wearing jod boots, these should be brown and navy hats (if ladies) and black (if men).

For evening performances, navy jackets, stocks instead of shirt and tie, and a top hat are correct (children depend on class rules).

For tweeds, dark green ones with a brighter overcheck look very smart.
