I think you have to weigh up your horse's security over winning in the show ring. I know lots of people who wouldnt freezemark as they think it goes against them in the ring. Personally I wouldnt let that stop me but then I dont show very much!
My horse has a freezemark under the saddle area.....It's never caused a problem. I think it might if it were on the shoulder area. You could consider a microchip....although I know it is not a visual deterrent.
any judge that marks down for a freezemark nees their head seeing to! mine has a freezemark and a brand from the forest and i was placed affiliated so dont think it matters!
Judges don't normally mark down for freezemarks, and, indeed, they are not supposed to. If a Judge marks down for a Freezemark, and one or two do, they need a Freezemark across their forehead.
I have had every animal I have owned Freezemarked, and their safety is my main priority.
I have had my mare freezemarked 4 weeks ago now, and showed her today...The judge did ask me what was that marking on her back was (as the scabs are just coming off now and looks a little strange right now). we came 4th out of 10, so i don't think it matters...
My Highland was placed fifth in her class at the Royal Show, and she has a freezemark on her shoulder. Disappointingly she was the only horse I saw there with a freezemark so I guess there is still some resistance to it.
Quite frankly it's bloody pathetic if judges are frowning upon freezemarking.
How could most people who have no identifying mark upon their horse and own a common breed and colour expect to ever get them back if they were stolen.
Personally I would put my ownership of the horse over a cosmetic issue.
Freezemarking is not just about the identifying mark they place on your horse. Your horse also goes on to a database and for a small fee this is all kept on record and if the horse ever went missing there is support and websites you can post details on such as horsewatch.
Without chipping, hoof branding or freezemarking most bay and brown horses would look the same and it would be so much easier for a thief to invent a passport for your horse.
With a unique number permanently frozen onto your horses skin then auctions and dealers can look out for your horse if it ever went missing. Without it they could not.
I think judges that mark down for this visual deterrent want a smack across the mouth or a kick in the balls depending on their gender and I would be most happy to do it!
Sorry but this is an emotive post and I feel strongly about it as no one should ever be made to feel they cannot brand their horse with an identity mark of ownership!
