with a child with an odd shape head, she looks normal enough but after 2 marathon hat fitting sessions at the local tack shop she is really difficult to fit.

The only one we could get was a Champion Ventair. Everything else left a nasty mark on her forehead and hurt her (and we must have tried on everything), if it didn't leave a mark it was too big despite them trying to pad the gaps.

Anyway my dilema is what to do in lead rein classes this summer, we have the outfits sorted but now her hat is going to be wrong and even if I do pay out for a seperate showing hat it prob won't fit and I don't want to put her on a pony with a badly fitted hat.

Will we be penalised for the wrong type hat (only local level showing), not sure a velvet cover would work as it has a fixed peak.

Any ideas

You won't be penalised as such/in so many words. It will depend on the judge as to whether it will effect the judging. But if there were two identical riders/ponies and there is no other way of telling them apart (and lets face it there are a few) it may sway a judges final choice.

Don't suppose you can remember what makes you tried? Did she try 'traditional velvet' hats too?

We tried Charles Owen and Champion trad velvet and JS cap both were no good. The trad. velvet was a bit better, the skull caps left a dreadful mark.

We did seem limited to those 2 makes. Hat would also need to be PC approved.

I'm difficult to fit a hat to and have a Champion Ventair however for my "posh" hat I have a Gatehouse Hickstead in black velvet with a flesh coloured harness which fits a treat. Don't know if you tried a gatehouse but might be worth looking around to try one. And yes, it's kitemarked too so PC approved!

I saw one of these on EBay but hadn't heard of the make, prob is now finding one to try on before buying it. Is your posh hat the same size as your Ventair?

Thanks

I was going to suggest the Gatehouse one too, they seem to be really popular for children showing and seem to fit the more 'difficult' to fit head.

Ooooh we are the same and have the same wonky head!!! mine is narrow (as in not much spam) but seems to be quite long (from forehead to back of head)

I'm difficult to fit and champion are the only ones that fit me! Maybe your daughter has a similar shaped head to me - poor thing!

Anyway at one time the only hat I could find to fit was a fixed peak one (when everyone had a skull cap for everything) and the way we got around the problem was to buy a silk or velvet cover as desired, unpick the stitching along the bottom of the peak in the silk and take the plastic soft peak out of the silk leaving a sort of "pocket" in the silk. This then fitted on the fixed peak hat and looked virtually the same as a normal skull cap!
