Im putting my youngsters in a youngstock class next weekend. Im just a bit concerned about plaiting and whether they will stand for that long etc.
Their dam's are full dutch WB and sire is a TB X Cob, so they have to be plaited dont they?
Oh and do they have to be bitted if they are nearly 2?
Any help please x
 
Yes, their manes should be plaited and their tails either pulled or plaited. They should also have bits in - I use rubber/plastic bits for youngsters under 2yo.

With regards to plaiting, are they used to having their manes brushed etc? I often find youngsters aren't as bad as you think they are going to be when it comes to plaiting, as long as they are used to being well handled. If they get fidgety, I go on to something else (brushing/hoof painting) and come back to the mane in a bit.
 
Hi, thanks. Well they are well handled just can be fidgety when brushing mane, Louis has a super thick and super long mane too

Im sure Il managerwith the manes.
So if I just tidy their tails up I dont have to plait them..Im only doing it for the experience really but I dont want to look silly! Lol
 
I use one of these on the tails rather than pull them;

You can also use them to thin the mane. I have battled with my youngster's mane for years - very thick and even if pulled properly, lots of split ends etc. In the end I realised the best way to plait him was to do lots of tiny plaits - this worked well on him as he has a thick neck (horse in my sig) but it might not work on a finer horse.
 
Thank you, so Ive got 11 days to practice plaiting, biting and running up and down! Arent they going to look quite funny with thick fluffy baby coats lol! X
