hi just a quick one, took my 3 yr old coloured to his first show yesterday at shepton mallet and to my surprise came in second, but the judged said after he would look better in a double bridle, i thought that would be a it harsh on a baby? is she right? also his head is black so should i go for a black or brown bridle?

I like brown tack for showing, although I have a piebald and do show him in black. What bit did you have him in yesterday? It is a big bit but the beauty of it is that you can use it soley on the snaffle rein if needs be.
 
I was there to yesterday, in the same class as you I think. Well done on your results he looked great. We got pulled in 6th. I wouldn't use a double bridle on him at the moment in hand put thats just my personal opinion. What did you think of the judging yesterday? (PM me if you want)
 
No way would I want to see a 3 yr old in a double!

Its common in hunter classes inhand, but yours is a youngster still and you should continue to show him as such...I'd stick with the snaffle.

And well done on coming second!
 
i thought it was ok, still a novice at showing. Do they judge on how your horse behaves aswell or just movement and conformation?
Did you think it was ok? And thanks for your views i thought it was too much for him.
 
i see no problem TBH...Its just cosmetic.

3 year olds should be shown in an inhand bridle with a snaffle - no doubles until 4 and shown in adult classes. In BSPA bitting rules are, yearlings are optional, 2 - 3 year olds - snaffle only.

I showed my traditional in a very nice inhand bridle until 4 and now show him in a pelham both ridden and in hand as a 5 year old.

Black tack is not strictly correct, but I do know people with piebalds do use it in preference to brown. However, traditionalist do frown at it.

Is yours a traditional, cob or a plaited type? He should wear a bridle that is suitable to his type, hence I use a thick chunky bridle with a 2" noseband on my boy which really suits him as he has a neat head with a big blaze. I did use black on my piebald mare, but show Chancer in brown as he is a dark bay skewbald.
 
i showed him as a traditional although he is not that heavy with only a little feather but a lovely long mane, he moves very well. i didnt know weather to trim and plait him up. he is jet black and white, so thought black bridle would look better
 
Have you a pic of him? You may be better showing him as a native type if he only has a little feather you may be better showing him as a native type, ie shorten his mane more like a welsh Ds, or if very little feather and lighter boned he might look better plaited

He's a very nice boy - lovely infact - I wouldn't use a double bridle on him at 3 - my girl is only 2 but theres no way she's going in a double at 3 - i'll stick with teh snaffle and would rather lose a placing for it.

I also show in Black since she is black/white too and I just prefer the black on her.
