Hi ,

I am a 12 year old and with my 14.2hh connemara next weekend i am showing him , have you got any tips with how to act and how to wow them . I have entered : novice pony , mountain and moorland . And also is a connemara a small mountain and moorland or a large thanks x

A connemara is a large breed, ensure he is turned out really well, properly trimmed to breed standards, as below copied from the NPS rule book

Connemara ponies should be shown in as natural a state as possible and the following rules should be
observed.
1. MANES - ponies should be shown unplaited. However, very thick manes may be discreetly thinned
but should look as natural as possible.
2. TAILS - should look natural and should not be pulled but may be squared off at the bottom.
3. HEAD - Ears may be trimmed flat (no trimming inside of the ears). Light trimming of long hairs in
jawline is permitted. Whiskers should not be trimmed.
4. LEGS - No trimming of feather on legs or trimming into heels.
5. No false hair, artificial colouring or make-up should be used.
6. Ridden ponies ONLY may be clipped in the interest of welfare. Legs should not be clipped. Under
no circumstances should foals be clipped.

You also need to look the part, smart tweed jacket, beige/ cream jods, short brown boots, shirt and tie, brown gloves and a cane, make sure your hair is neat and tidy.

You should practise a short show that shows off his paces although some judges will ask for a set show so make sure you listen to any instructions they give, above all have fun and enjoy the day.

As a connemara is a large breed M&M long black boots should be worn NOT short brown ones.
Also navy velvet hat and for girls your hair should be in a bun.

Most connemarad will have pulled/tidied manes of around 8 to 10 inches long depending on what suits the pony best.
