So I seem to have just done a deal on a Dartmoor for my young son! Mine are non-natives, the only native I used to show was a Welsh Cob so I have no idea what the correct turnout is of a Dartmoor (to trim the mane like Welsh D's or totally natural etc.?) and general correct way of going for this breed etc. Can anyone advise please :)

Congratulations, I think I may know the pony in question and she is fabulous! Re turnout, as natural as possible, little bit of baby oil on muzzle, no make up and no black hoof gloss, go for a plain bridle, I reckon you would do well up here as there are very very few, so in small m&m classes she will really stand out, congrats and hope to see her out next year!

Thanks, small world ;) Although as you say theres not many around up here. So by natural, is some degree of tidying still expected like under jawline and mane straightened (or long and natural)?

We're not massively into showing but will do it for experience for her, my son will probably get bored of sitting about in line-ups so hoping to do more tiny PC sort of stuff. Saying that Id quite like to do some in-hand with her next year so we'll see how we go :)

Natural but some shortening of the mane to show off the neck, under jaw trimmed but not too closely, tail can be shortened a bit but not cut straight, they are a very easy breed to turnout well as they usually have a natural wave in the mane and tail, no white to worry about, just wash and go and they look as if you have spent hours on them.

There are very, very few decent Dartmoor's shown up in Scotland. The good ones come up from down south to pick up our HOYS tickets. I have a very good one but he is quirky as hell so is hit and miss in the show ring - plus he can't gallop lol! It's so funny! Well no it's not when you are in the main ring at the Highland and all expect you to pull off a stonking gallop due to your job - then if just gets embarrassing lol! I will go and find a PIC of the beast.

Meet Shilstone Rocks Fancy Free - by Shilstone Rocks Snowfox out of Shilstone Rocks Freefall. 12.2hh brick out house of a pony who is cold backed but awesomely good fun! I know I am a bit big on him but I didn't have him properly beefed up for the Highland this year.
