So now BD have relaxed their views on double bridles etc, something I have always wondered is why is it seen to be more is it correct for show horses/ponies them?

Now I no nothing about showing so tell me if I am wrong.

I reckon its tradition. You are never dressed correctly unless you are wearing spurs, tweed, etc. and ladies in hair net as side saddle, etc. Double bridle is old fashioned and correct, regardless of the effect it is having!

Sometimes in showing people put them in a pelham with two reins, but double is proper. Also in the showring control is of the utmost importance, the horse has to be absolutely on the aids, correct in every way, not a foot out of place.

Supposed to look nicer too!

Technically it is more correct to wear a double bridle. However, in the past, horses have been deemed to have "bad mouths" simply because they could not take double bits. Now, you can use pelhams or doubles, whatever suits your horse more. You should not be marked down for using a pelham instead of a double in a show class. These days you will probably see as many pelhams (or types of pelham) as you do double bits in a county class. In cob classes you will also see bits like the Swales being used.

I have a pelham in my lads mainly because you have to canter in a group and quite often gallop in a group, that can get very very hair raiseing if you dont have perfect control!

I suppose doubles were always thought of as more "correct" I used to show P is a double but changed to a rubber pelham this year. He kept getting his tongue over the bit in the double and despite alot of effort we just couldn't sort it. We now think the port may have been to high in his mouth; Anyway switched to the pelham and he loves it, jumps much better in the Workers with it too
