It's not to make a profit though - there were so many members that the current board couldn't cope. Saddle Up is subscription now too, but it is definitely worth it.

On the original show ring we were having problems with some ex members causing a lot of trouble, and decided that in the interests of sanity for the moderators and members, that we would make it subscription only. We had gone down the password route already, but this did not seem to stop the trolls. Interestingly, there are only half a dozen or so of the regular posters who have not moved across. Any money which is made as a result of the subscriptions is given to a charity chosen by the members. The new board is fantastic, very little trouble and people who had not posted much in the past feel much more confident about posting.
If you want to be able to read the old forums (and bear in mind also that the main site contains LOADS of information) go to:

http://theshowring.proboards88.com/ for the old show ring website which still has some useful threads available.
Many specialised website now charge because of problems they had with trolls and issues with moderation. There are other sites which have spun off as a result of the new charges, but interestingly, even the mods of the other sites post more on the new Show Ring than on their own sites!
The saddest thing is that it WILL stop some people from joining, but the good thing is that our original members are happy to post again which I think is the most important thing.
