Hello,

I was recently interested by ridden showing and I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough outline of what it is and what you do as it is not really covered on the internet..

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am very interested in this!

Thanks :)

You need to decide what type of horse will suit you and what you enjoy doing, other than showing, most will have other jobs unless they are at the very top level.
Hunters, light, middle or heavyweight, can also do workers, hunt and many will event, dressage or sj as another job, they need to be quality, fit into a weight category and be, like all good show horses, excellent movers, with correct conformation and be very well schooled.
Cobs, light or heavyweight, up to 155cm or maxi over 155cm, as for hunters they need to be true to type and fit into a weight class.
Riding horses, under 158cm or over, a really quality type of horse, often tbs, more elegant than hunters.
Hacks, not so popular nowdays the really quality show horse that is beautifully schooled, more of a specialist show horse than most of the others.

Then you have all the others which can often do several jobs in the show ring as well as outside, coloured, part breds, all the native breeds and some of the more unusual breeds, the choice is up to you but if you decide you want to show you need to find the best horse of it's type that you can, correct conformation, movement and with a good temperament then work on producing a well mannered, well educated horse that is a pleasure to own and ride, you will be halfway there, the rest can be very subjective and is down to the judge.
