I’m a complete newbie to showing and have no idea what classes I could enter and how to turnout appropriately.
I want to do it for fun and experience so will just be at local level.
I have a 17.2hh Oldenburg gelding, he’s 17 so I know that he’ll be classed as a veteran but other than that I have no idea what classes he could be in.

So my main questions are

- how do I turnout my horse
- what should I wear
- what classes could we enter

Can anybody help me 😂

At that size he is most likely of hunter type, although could possibly be a large riding horse if he is really quality, hunter is the most simple , he needs a plain bridle ideally brown with a wide flat noseband and no bling, either a double or pelham although a snaffle will do for local level or novice classes. A well fitting saddle, a discrete dark numnah and 'normal' stirrups/ girth.

You wear tweed, beige/ cream jods, long black boots/ short boots and gaiters will be fine if that is what you have, for hunter classes you should wear spurs but they are not allowed in veteran classes, cream/ or other pale colour shirt, tie, brown gloves, hair in net and a suitable hat, preferably navy velvet, carry a show cane.

Horse needs to be trimmed, tail pulled or raked at the top, plaited if you really have to, plaited mane, simple squares and sharks teeth on quarters and obviously groomed to within an inch of his life!!

At local level there will be a range of classes which vary from show to show, you could do working hunters if you jump, riding club horse, veterans as well as the hunters and or riding horse, whatever you do the turnout is much the same although riding horses do usually wear a velvet browband it is not essential.
