Hi :)

I am doing my first in hand show next weekend and wanted some advice as to what I should wear?!

I will be competing at a local show with a 19yo chestnut welsh sec B! :) a link should be pasted below for a picture of him :)

my questions are:
1) do i need to wear a hat? i do not have a velvet hat and only have a champion ventair helmet... should i wear this? re hair does it need to be in a hair net/ bun and should I wear a scrunchie?
2) what colour shirt and tie is appropriate or does it not matter, and should my shirt be long or short sleeved?
3) what colour trousers should i wear?! have read various things about contrasting with colour of horses legs... what colour suits chestnuts?
4) his bridle is brown so should i wear brown short boots?:)
5) finally... do I need to wear gloves and what colour should they be?

any other tips/ advice appreciated...

Thanks in advance!!!

This is my opinion, others may differ

1) Hat, yes unless you are showing at a county show, it really doesn't matter. You could choose a flat cap or trilby type but you then forgo the safety aspect. Hair should be tidy so it doesn't blow when you run.

2) IMO it doesn't matter, though pale cream/yellow shirt is usual, you should also wear a jacket or waistcoat. So if waistcoat then long sleeves

3)Trousers... beige or dark I think either would work with chestnut

4) Boots... wear something comfortable that you can run in

5)Gloves... dark, colour is not important.

Have a look on websites to see what others wear. Most importantly HAVE FUN

1) Yes always wear a hat. For inhands this can be a trilby, beagler, flat cap or velvet riding hat however at local shows provided you have somthing on your head that isnt a baseball cap then it doesnt matter what! Hair should be in a bun, this is a proper bun not just a hair bundled into a net with a scruchie hanging down your back! Scrunchie is personal choice in M&M classes some people do, some dont.

2) Any pastel colour is acceptable. I personaly have a blue shirt and red and white tie. Long sleeves is best if you havnt got a tweed jacket, if you are wearing a tweed then go for what ever is comfy.

3) with chestnuts I tend to air towards the beige trousers (not white! they wont be white by the time you make it to the ring) but Navy is also a good colour to contrast chestnut legs

4) provided your boots are comfortable, neat and you can run in them no one will notice the colour or indeed whether they are walking boots, jod boots or other smart shoes.

5) yes you must wear gloves, brown leather is correct but at local you will get away with any dark colour.

If you are unsure about anything ask the steward, if your horse totaly loses the plot (at his age he shouldnt but you never know) then gracefully retire rather than mow someone over. Smile, enjoy and have fun!
