Hi all,

Are there any experienced showing fanatics who might be able to answer my questions regards Intermediate Show Riding Type Classes?

I understand the judges look for more advanced movements in these classes such as walk - canter, serpentine and possibly rein-back (if done well!) ???

What is the judge looking for in terms of conformation?
(despite the obvious miniature show horse/overgrown show pony build, good topline, neat head and neck and clean limbs)

What makes one show out?

How can I achieve that very consistent, "show pony" frame besides good lateral work, using a Pessoa etc. I am looking to use my leather pad to do some strapping, would it be a worthwhile idea?

I am not looking to do HOYS Qualifiers or any such level as that, but it would be nice to the novice and restricted classes - when the horse is ready and if she makes the height restrictions!

The ISRT should be a really 'quality' animal.

The shows are more complex, but must be executed well. A good gallop is also a must. I would go and watch a few classes before entering to give you an idea of what is expected.

As for standing out a lot of it is the animal's natural presence - something no amount of schooling can achieve!

As for the way of going I'm afraid it is an awful lot of hard work at home. Schooling and lessons with good showing bod.

The frame again is achieved through hard work at home and feeding, strapping can help but work is what really brings it on.

Conformation must be spot on, quality (again) good free movement and especially a good walk are needed and not pushing the animal out of its rhythm in trot.

BSPS area shows are a good place to start out - especially Winter shows and early Spring shows as the entries tend to be a bit down!

How is your horse bred? (Purely out of curiosity)

I'm afraid with regards top showing bloodlines she is nothing to shout about!
She is a small thoroughbred who failed in training for being too slow (which is easy to believe) but in terms of racing bloodlines she has some of the best in the world.

she is nicely put together and a lovely solid dark bay/black with no markings save for a little smudge on her forehead, she'd suit the type I believe with some fattening up and correct work but as you can probably tell I have no experience of affiliated showing!
I've been show jumping for the last 5 years despite my deep love for showing at local level and would love to give it a go - but I'm quite competitive and one for doing things properly, so if I'm going to do it I want to look the part and have a rough idea!

Do you happen to know of any showing producers/instructors in either the Gloucestershire or Derbyshire/Staffordshire area? I believe that is the BSPS areas 9a and 4a?

Katy Carter is in Staffordshire and is lovely. There will be others but I am in the North so not sure who else is who down your way, Google is your friend, or ask on Horse Gossip forum.

Most ISRTs will have a lot of TB blood. We have 2 ex racehorses, one hack type and one Riding Horse type and we really struggle to keep them round enough for showing. Ours were in racing for a number of years. If yours hasn't run she wont be able to do RoR but I think I am correct in saying she can do TARRA classes which would be a good starting point.

Have a Google for Clare Poole, she is in Gloucestershire and focuses on retraining and producing exracehorses for the show ring. She is also the Wales and Severn RoR coordinator and a lovely person to boot! Good luck :)
