Ahh more on my new pony,
Basically, when i got her 2weeks ago she was nervous so turned her bum to you in the stable until she came round...
Now she's getting more confident, when im in the stable she carriers on doing what she's doing, until i go to brush her, anything past her shoulder she spins 100mph and reverse's
She hasn't kicked me yet as i haven't given her the chance, but i want to stop this before it becomes dangerous!!
Ive tried the lots of talking and being nice, didn't work.
Raising my voice so she knows im not happy, doesn't work.
if i have a headcollar on & leadrope she throws her head up and reverse's
Any suggestions?

dont brush her in the stable?? put a head collar on and tie her up outside (fairly short with quick release knot)

mine are both fine in the stable (muck out round them, can groom tack up clip beards off, pull manes whatever), but i still tie them outside when im grooming/tacking up usually just because its a good routine to have.
Im in Leeds, if you want a hand or anything one weekend Pm me...

It may sond rather silly but maybe she just wants a itch? My mare turns her bum on me frequently her way of asking for a good bum scratch probably not the best behaviour to endorse however shes with me for life. So possibly its just a bad habit/manners? :D

It may be she's always been tied up outside for grooming etc so views the stable as her space - if this is the case you either accept that she's happier tied up outside or work to get her used to doing things in the stable.

As she's been nervous with you I would avoid shooing or shouting at her when she does this - I don't mean to imply that you would but it's often an involuntary thing when a horse is backing up at you! You want to keep her trust in you and the best way to stop her turning her bum at you is to avoid situations where she feels it is necessary until her confidence has grown.

The first thing is to make sure she's paying attention to you by asking her to move back and sideways away from your hand when asked. You should also work on voice commands in hand - teaching her to 'stand' when asked should prove helpful.

I would then try using a long leadrope threaded through the tie ring and held in one hand. Brush her with the other starting where she's comfortable and only moving past the shoulder when she's completely chilled. If she goes to pull back pay out some line so as not to panic her but bring her back forwards as soon as you can. Go straight back to brushing the same place and repeat as often as necessary until she realises you're going to continue until she stands nicely.

I'd also look at the brush you're using and maybe try something really soft and gentle as if she's sensitive a harsher brush could be upsetting her.

It sounds like you are trying to groom her without tying her up???????? Not very wise with a new horse that you are and unsure of and she is unsure of you. i always tie my horses up to groom them - one of them ive owned for 10years now! Its easier for starters.

Tie her up if you are unsure of her but I'd give her the benefit of the doubt because my big mare will suddenly reverse up to you in the field and it's a bit unnerving until you realise she's got this big "thinks bubble" over her head saying "Scratch my ARXX,, backside"

Thanks for the replies guys, im going to tie her up outside her stable tonight before the other horses are brought in, as there is a few biters who would gladly take a chunk from her

The main problem is, she has aquired a new pet, a pigeon!!! She happily lets it sit on her back through the night, which in turn she ends up Covered in poop! So as i am the first person down on a morning i cannot tie her up outside without her getting bit, and there is nowhere inside the stable to tie her..

I have 8 horses and one of them is a shetland who just hates to be groomed. She has a one track mind (food) if I groom her in the stable she charges round like a nutter or if I put her in the corner she will turn her bum on me. I always give them a treat when I have finished and she starts searching in my hands and pockets as soon as I close my brush box. I have had her for years and she is totally calm around me in every other way. She is just very headstrong and knows what she wants. If I tie her up she stands there sighing as if to say (the b..ch has got me stuck here)
Maybe yours is the same.
Good luck and keep us posted

her back might be irritated then if your having to scrape the pigeon crap off- could she wear a lightweight sheet on a night to prevent it?

oh and minime, i would just cut out all the tit-bits- they dont need a treat for being groomed! shes worked out that if she hurrys you up (by making it awkward) then she gets food.
blummin 'eck now i know why i dont have *****lands

Good idea - Ive just ordered one :o

It's the obvious things i never see due to getting so het up about the little things!!

In all honesty as she is my first horse in 4years im back on the learning curve..
Very tempted to offer her for share i.e someone ride/teach her manners in return for unlimited riding free of charge..Are people ever interested in this or should i start a thread? I really am grateful for any help :D

QR - As one of the other posters suggested, tie her up out side. Stables are the horses place, and although pulling faces and threatening isn't good in the stable, I always consider the stable as their space.

When ever I muck out, groom, rug or tack up, its always outside, not only does it make it easier for me, but also gives me more space (and light) than in the stable. I would never condone threatening behaviour though!
