Ok so Ive trawled the Internet and still I'm no wiser. I've shown youngsters before but at 2 and 3 yr old so im guessing it's a little different at 1. He's a Dutch warm blood and I'll be doing hunter/sport horse breeding classes.

All I want to know is:-

Does he need to be bitted? Some sites say yes some say no, yes he's gelded coz a couple of sites say that colts must be bitted.

Can anyone recommend me a showing bridle or point me in the right direction on what to go for? A lot of site talk about a "3 way" instead of attaching a lead rein to the bit. That's just a chain or leather attachment that allows you to connect the rein without being on the bit right?

Because I'll also be showing my hunter is the same dress ok? Jodhpurs, tweed jacket, long boots, velvet show hat etc or should I be swapping the jodhpurs for trousers and jodphur boots?

I'm going to go and watch at the 1st show I could have taken him to so I can 1, eye up the competition and 2, see what I need to be doing. Any other tips and pointers greatly accepted x

When I showed my yearling who was a huge (RID) gelding I used a nice in hand bridle with brass buckles and browband, with a rubber straight bar snaffle with brass rings and a leather lead rein (longish) attached to a brass 2 way coupling.

I think you need to have the bridle made so it suits the horse, many in hand bridles can be on the lightweight side and look a bit silly on a horse with a larger or plain head. 3/4 inch leather at the least for a big horse.

Black leather cane, blue/grey tweed hacking jacket, dark trousers, black jod boots, dark gloves, shirt and tie, hairnet and black velvet cap with tails sewn up. Horse was a dark dapple grey

Same turnout as a 2 year old and moved onto to a double bridle as a 3 year old by which time he was 17.2hh and could be strong.

Good luck.

I showed mine as a yearling in tweed jacket, trousers and short boots, shirt and tie and velvet hat. She wore an in hand bridle with straight rubber bit, had a chain which attached to either side of the bit then clipped leather lead rein to the other ring. You can get leather versions of the chain which do look better. Enjoy it! It's really good for them to get out and see things.

That was me wearing the tweed, not the horse!!!
