Showing on a budget and other questions

Hi

Any idea or tips for this? I managed to source a jacket from my local tack shop, I have got a shirt and tie, but any idea of how/where I can get a hunter noseband etc? Is it acceptable, at local level, to ride in a pelham with roundings in a working hunter class? And a riding horse class for that matter?

That noseband looks fine to me.

I've always shown in a pelham with 2 reins (I think roundings and one rein looks tacky! Sorry!). You also have slightly better control if your horse is prone to whizzing off in the gallop part of your show... Not that it ever happened to me of course!!!

I'm not sure about riding horse classes I'm afraid. I did working hunters until the cows came home.

I ride in a pelham and roundings in local shows...don't know if that's actually correct though!!

Bridle is fine, need to reins don't use roundings, if you really can't handle two reins get a pair of split reins.
Rememder for riding horse you need a fancy browband

bridle looks fine, but yes use two reins not roundings. You can use the same bridle for riding horse classes just change the browband for a velvet one. Tweed jacket correct for both ridden/working hunter and riding horse classes.

As things tend to go out of fashion very quickly these days with horses try the table top tack sales, it's amazing what people want shot of and you can pick up a real bargain. Great for picking up second hand bridles, reins, leather girths, etc.

We're on a tight budget and do OK showing local and a bit of county level. A lot of our stuff came from Ebay and 2nd hand classified ads. 2 growing daughters etc etc, and one of the damn ponies grew too! Just go for known brands, English Leather, top quality hacking jackets. You can often get an idea of the quality just by finding out via google what the item cost new.

I've also found out that it is cheaper to get the local harness maker to make us a bridle than to buy a smart Jeffries one from the tack shop. Far better quality too. Same goes for stirrup leathers, hers cost the same as mid range brands and don't stretch (and look like they'd last 20 years).

Ebay is a good source if you know exactly the sizes you are after.
Little things like not using the white or black tape for your number and using either plaiting thread or brown elastic, making sure your shirt collar fits you, finding a nice tie. The bridle you put up looks good but absolutely no roundings. Use double reins on your pelham and you will look very smart. Your horse looked good in those pics - so keep trying as it will be worth it in the end!
