Hey everyone,

Im going to a local show on saturday .. soo my pre show nerves are ALREADY starting to kick in lol.

Im just wondering on what people do in there own show in the showing ring?
Im thinking of starting off in walk, onto the outside then in trot .. change the rein in trot again .. then have some sort of canter on both reins haha.

Last time I got so nervous and I really need to think about it properly. Leaving it late yes I know lol. Im hoping that she doesnt nap either when she has to leave the other horses to do my "own show".

Sorry guyss los of nerves here!!

xx

Good luck for sat.
In my indervidual show i normaly walk away from the judge, Trot a figre of eight, Then canter a figre of eight with a gallop behind the lineup if required then i go back to trot then walk twords the judge hault and salute.
Hope this makes sence to you. Hope you have fun just remember to smile :) It's ment to be fun :D (thats the part i always forget :p)

this is really helpful!

If you think she may nap towards the horses, put your cane or crop in the hand nearest the horses so you can keep her off that shoulder from them!

smile, have fun!!!

I tend to walk away, onto outside, trot half a circle canter half a circle, across the diagonal and trot (if big enough, if not i trot it) and then pick up canter as I reach the track on the other rein, gallop a length, then into trot, then walk halt salute.

Basically show a little walk on one rein, then a trot and canter on both reins with an extension/gallop if appropriate. The figure of 8 is the classic and works realy well. You don't need to trot the full figure, just one loop does the trick.

If you have some time before your class watch some of the other classes. They'll give you a good idea what to do.

Some good advice in the posts above. I can only add just make sure that you keep your show short. Novices often make the mistake of going round again and again, especially if they have made a mistake. If your canter strike off happens to be on the wrong leg, come back to trot and strike off again immediately. Judges can get very bored by competitors who spend too long on their individual shows. Good luck!

Another show you can do is to walk away from the judge, as if going to H in an arena, Do a simple two loop serp, show a circle at one end in canter, another two loop serp back to the other end of the ring, another circle of canter and as you come off the second loop, show extension (gallop down the long side in front of the judge. Back to trot, go accross the diagonal to change the rein, walk, turn in and halt about half way accross the ring so you create a "photo" for the judge to view. Don't attempt reinback etc unless you can do it perfectly. This works well for a strong horse as they don't get the opportunity to really get going before having to turn.

Even shorter one, walk away from the Judge going to the left, where H would be go into trot and change the rein, as if you were going M to K in a dressage test As you get to K go into canter, then in canter F - H but half way change back to trot. As you hit H, into canter, then on the long side, show a short gallop. Back to canter by where F would be and then back to trot as you go K - M. Be in walk by K and again as you would arrive at C, halt and finish.

Or play very safe, and do figure of 8s, but if you can do something a little different, it will stand out more for the judge - but only if you can do it perfectly.

Finally, I practice sections of show my but rarely the whole thing at once as Stinky then thinks he should be doing this on autopilot even when I don't want him to change pace. I often start in walk, then do it all in trot and finally putting in the canter sections and only rarely the gallop.

I havent done any showing for about 7 years. Is the gallop essential....i only seem to be able to get a fast canter in the school despite paddy being "forward going"!! Unless i am just used to my previous horse when you only had to release the reins a bit and touch with your legs and you were going like he had a rocket up his a**!!!!
Do you get marked down for just cantering.

Also is there any really good websites to describe what is expected in each class and what to wear?

Thank you all very much! Tomorrow I am wearing beige jods, long boots, a greeny tweed Jacket, with a beigy tie and white shirt. But I am also doing dressage too so I have to change :D

Ermm yeah I think. Also how long do you think "own show" has to be?

xx

My daughter does this

I do this...

The black is walk, the trot is orange, the green is canter and the blue is gallop.
The little line is the line up and the little black dots are the judge and steward.
And obviously the line at the end is the halt...

Keep it short sweet and to the point, it isnt a dressage test. Judge doesnt want to see you do endless figures of eight and circles.

As someone who has stewarded for a lot of different judges the key is to keep the show short and sweet, judges generally like you to walk away and trot back directly in front of them ( they generally move out of the way) so they can assess the horses action, then carry on with your show usually a figue of eight, most judges consider an overly long show bad manners especially in a very large class. Good luck I'm sure you will be fine
