Right, I have a little question regarding my little newfies untamed mane! For (native) showing purposes, does the mane HAVE to lie on the correct side, or is it not an essential part of the turnout?

See, most of the time he looks like Don King on a bad hair day!(below)

But with abit of a tidy up he doesn't look too bad(as in this pic)

So, does it REALLY matter, in which case I'll have to do some mane taming.....or is it a case of as long as it's neatand tidy on the day it doesn't really matter?

Cheers guys

how sweet! I have nothing to do with showing, so have no idea, but personally a real pet hate of mine is manes on the wrong side (left hand side.) However, this is more for stabled horses, I wouldnt be too concerned if it looked like that in the field - in fact - it looks very hip nd punk!!

Unfortunatly native no longer means they look as if they have come straight from the wild. The Welshes I used to work for had manes on the correct side, tidied so they are straight and neat, baby oil, whitener, feathers straightened, you get the picture. This was at Ponies UK and they were all doing it.

Looks like the little fella is going to have to sport a few girlie plaits in order to 'encourage' his mane onto the right side

Nooo, I have 2 NF's both of whom have deviant manes, they do fine (quite well actually) at shows! I was advised by a well respected breeder (who's very succesful in the showring) to leave well alone. If the pony's that good, the side the mane lies on doesn't matter, she said.
