I'm showing my Sec D in hand at the mo and will progress to ridden when we have established a half-decent canter.

I have a grey hacking jacket (currently worn with black hat, boots, glove and cane) and want to change to green.
I've seen a Tagg jacket I really like (and can actually afford), but it's got blue velvet collar and piping on the pockets. Tagg used to do this with green velvet, but have now discontinued it.

My question is - is this correct for M&M? If I bought it, would I have to change to a blue hat (which I understand is incorrect) or could I still wear a black one with it? I can't afford to change my hat as well - I was still going to wear a black one with brown boots, gloves and cane - would that be ok?

If I can't find a another green one I like, should I go for the one with blue collar or not? (I don't really like it though!)

That sounds fine, you can wear any colour hat when showing ridden M&M's.

The blue collar is becoming much more common in the ridden classes, but its entirely up to you, if you don't like it keep looking.
 
At City of Swansea show M+M workers (qualifier for HOYS) the majority were wearing navy hats (or brown) didn't see a black one at all
 
It is rare to see ladies wearing black hats for affiliated showing - generally only men wear black. M&Ms are the most multicoloured - green, brown and blue are all fairly common. I would change your hat to blue which is correct for any colour jacket - then you can chop and change jackets as much as you like.

However, showing in hand Welsh has a whole set of different rules.
 
blue hat is correct for women. Velvet collars and piping are fairly common and tolerated in the M&M's.

Black long boots are correct for large breed M&M's.

brown gloves and cane though.
 
Should definily have a blue hat, but, if you do get the jacket with a blue collar, you shouldn't wear it with a black hat, so you have to either find another jacket, or change your hat as well as getting the jacket.

I'm only showing at local level, but want to get it right cos who knows what might happen!!

Now then - the boots. I have always worn joddy boots even when doing ridden M&M cos I like them. I have no choice but to wear them for in hand, cos I cannot run in long boots anyway.

If I have the green jacket with blue velvet and get a blue hat (oh dear - that's next months' wages gone as well), what colour joddy boots should I wear - black or brown? I have both, so unlike the hat, that's not a money issue!

brown short boots if you must however long black boots are correct for ridden.

for inhand short boots are fine, but i would wear a pair of trousers instead of jods as it looks better.
 
You can always get in touch with Designer Browbands and see if you can get some green velvert to replace the blue velvert. It is easy enough to do.
 
Whoops - didn't notice you were talking about in hand. Welsh cobs have a whole differnet set up for in hand (if you are a "pro") - half of them don't wear hats and wear trainers or football boots in order to run fast. However, it looks better (and neater) to wear a hat of some sort, but it doesn't have to be a riding hat (unless a child is leading the horse).

Straight cut trousers and jod boots are more correct for in hand, but you will not be penalised for wearing jods and long boots. As you are an adult, then long black boots are correct - however you could get away with black jod boots and well fitting gaiters. If you are just wearing jod boots, then brown ones are correct for the show ring, not black.
