Will depend on level of show and what else is in the class. Local level you can generally get away with it particularly if horse goes better in a snaffle. Affiliated would be pelham or double. Not sure about affiliated novice class - with a riding horse or hack you can use a snaffle at novice but not open. Don't know for hunters.
