IF (big IF) I was to show my mare inhand next year what would be correct? She is black with 4 whites, so dark trousers and a shirt and tie? What colour? Tweed jacket? Hat or no hat? And, does she have to wear a white halter or can i show her in an inhand bridle as I seriously doubt Id hold her in a halter lol. She will be 8 next year. Thanks in advance.

Tweed jacket, tie to match the tweed. In-handbridle is OK. Far more important than what you are wearing is how you present her. Practise leading her in hand - you need to match strides.

I would personally go for a ridden bridle over an inhhand one, take the reins over her head to lead her with

Its more correct to use a halter, but being in control is more important.

With welshies, it depends what show you go to. Some breed shows, anything goes, jazzy waistcoats, flowing hair etc. Other shows you tend to go more nativey with jackets and hats.

As a "young handler" this is what I wore sometimes

Other times I would wear trousers, add a waistcoat or jacket. I always wore a hat, she was a saint but you get some prats unfortunately and you wont look out of place either way.

thanks both - id didnt think a ridden bridle would be correct? mine is also black...?

id certainly want to start out with a bridle rather than a halter. We had a go at a recent lowkey indoor show, which was really very quiet and lets just say I needed the extra control, although she went very well.

Although lots of Sec D mares are shown in white halters it is perfectly OK to use an in-hand bridle - check out the rules on the WPCS website (they were in the magazine too).

You can wear either tweed jacket or a waistcoat with shirt and tie - go for colourways to complement her colouring.

Remember that you will have to run like the wind to keep up with her trot so choose your footwear wisely!

fabulous thanks! At the show we were at the judge said Id need to run more... i wasnt prepared that day though and had boots on. I have fab hockey trainers with rubber studs I use for running when I compete with the dogs (agility), they are white and pink though lol, would my footwear need to be *ahem* more discrete? I can guarantee i can sprint in them tho!:D

also, on a black horse is a black or brown bridle more correct?

Brown is correct, but i wouldnt be going out and changing her wardrobe unless you are going all out and planning on doing lots!
Id say tweed, shirt and tie, beige/fawn trousers, and id wear a hat, preferably with a strap at least until you guage how you may be with lots of welshies on their back legs waving paws, I didnt used to bother until i had a few near misses, not with my own i hasten to add
Hope to see you out soon ;)

Hi i have shown A's and B's and if under 4yo they are in a halter and from 4 in a bridle also if the pony is light coloured them its black trousers and if dark then its beige (so the judge can see who's legs are who's) and tweed jacket and allways a hat (can be soft or hard but i go for hard:D) .
