Hi Guys.
Someone who shows welsh a's and d's totally shocked me tonight in what she said regarding showing section d's.
So, could any Section D folks please advise me on the following points;
Mains. What length should it be - that is , what range
Tail. Same question
Whiskers, On or off.

many thanks

Yes, that is what I thought (I have a show section A) but this person who is far more experienced showing said that they should have whiskers removed, mane no longer than 6" and tail 2" below the hock. I feel that the mane and whisker points are wrong.

Anyone else please?

The answer is what you think you can get away with..
Most D's get some careful trimming of their mane to make their necks looks crestier and the rest is up to you. if it's obvious what you've trimmed you'll get placed lower down, so you need to do it slowly and very carefully...

Welsh D's are probably the least "natural" for showing!! Like this for an example (see mane is shortened and straightish):

I think judges like to see the underside of the neck so manes dont tend to be left like a Highlands mane for example! Although I have noticed that the in-hands tend to have a lot longer mane than a ridden. And ridden's seem to have theirs thinned a bit as well.

Tail-wise, dont know measurement wise but off the ground and sort of feathered (some do it to a point).

Whiskers, I believe most cut them off.

I show my D (not at anything more than local / small country level though!) and his mane is straightened and short enough you can see under his jaw / neck. I leave whiskers on because I hate to remove them for the horses sake. His tail Ive never had to touch - it grows to a certain point and stays like it so it looks really natural because it is!

welsh d's are definitely not shown natural. most ridden's have their manes at about 4-6inches and their tails switched to hock level. i leave whiskers, but most will take them off.

If they're lucky...the old fashioned way with the chin, whiskers and ear hair is to burn it/singe it off!

Thank you guys. I do wish when it says 'natural state' they would mean that. Mind you, my hubby thinks 'natural state' means unbrushed and covered in mud straight from the field!!

I currently have a fabulous Welsh D livery and he is going on Saturday. He is a very handsome fella and has been very successful in the show ring. He has been left for some months now relaxing and his mane is beautiful. It falls below the lower edge of his neck, and I am horrified to think he will soon loose it all, just for showing purposes. Good job he isn't mine I guess!!
