Im going annoy everyone to death with my showing Q's!!!
grin.gif

I tried Dexter in a happy mouth pelham last night with double reins and he hated it!! He went awful really on the forhand and just awful TBH! So he will have to go in a snaffle no matter what they prefer! Although I will wear my plaited reins!

Question is are all snaffles permitted i.e. loose ring, copper snaffle or is an eggbut better?

Thanks

With affiliated classes for horses, novice classes are OK in snaffles, workers (novice and open) are OK in snaffles. However, if you are doing open affiliated flat classes (i.e. show hunter, riding horse etc) then your horse will be expected to be in double reins.

Im doing search for a star (so unaff I think) and he is doing the hack class, so I presume any snaffle is ok?

I have just done my first showing class under the saddle with Chancer locally and he had his in hand bridle on with plaited reins and his usual copper snaffle. I am not investing this year in a good ridden bridle as am only getting experience.

Next year when I start affililated showing, I will have a new bridle and use a stainless bit but will still be in the snaffle as he will be doing novice classes. I hope by next summer to be able to use a pelham for open classes.

If I were you, go showing in the snaffle and work at home getting him used to the pelham - just ride off the top rein and have the curb chain set so it doesn't come into play unless you really use the bottom rein brakes.

Even my very fussy WB mare got used to a pelham with time.

If you are going for fun and experience, then wear what he likes - if you get bitten by the showing bug - and there are days when I really wished I hadn't, then spend time and energy on the pelham.

Hack classes, they will probably all be in doubles or pelhams - I know Search for a Star is treated very seriously by a lot of people who are trying to get to compete at HOYS. That said, rules state "Horses may be shown in snaffle, double or Pelham bridles".

Hope you have a great time and I wish you the best of luck.

You may be OK in SFAS in a snaffle - it is such a weird competition - but you will probably be the only one wearing a snaffle. However, if the horse gives as good a ride as the other you should be OK. Personally, I would rather go for a double instead of a pelham - you can ride off the bradoon in the same way as you do from your snaffle and only need to hold the weymouth rein.
