I know dogs need to be entire, but what about bitches?
Aunts dane has grown into a truely stunning lady but because aunt never had any intention of breeding from her she is spayed.
Now,aunt has some health problems so couldnt show her herself and has said if I want to take E out she would love it BUT doesnt seem much point doing ringcraft with her if she cant show because she is spayed.

do they have to be entire? lol
never knew that

I'm not sure what the rules are nowadays, but I think it used to be that you could show a spayed bitch if she had had a litter prior to being spayed. I'm sure if you had a look at the KC websit there would be some information there, or some forum members who show currently will be able to advise you.

If you have a bitch spayed (or a dog castrated) and wish to continue showing you are supposed to notify the KC, possibly but *I'm not sure* apply for permission to show - like you would now with a docked dog after the law change.

BUT unlike a dog it's not noticable that a bitch isn't "entire" so to speak, so you will most likely be fine to show her still so long as you don't spread it around! I know lots of spayed bitches in the ring who haven't notified the KC, no one ring side seems to bother.

Hope that helps

Agree....its hard and sometimes impossible if u dont know what to look for in signs of a bitch being speyed.....a bitch may need to be speyed for medical reasons.....surely this is taken into consideration if any suspisions.

I know lots of people that show to a high level who have their bitches neutered.

Ohh thankyou

Will have a look around the KC site for some more info.
E was only ever going to be a pet, he breeder is a friend so her bloodlines are "out there" getting her spayed was no great loss from that point of view, just removed the temptation for my Aunt.No way could she cope with a litter of danes, lol!
Would be nice to do some ringcraft and shows for fun,she how she does.
If nothing else it will be fin for her and give her something to think about.

Supose best way to go is keep mouth shut and plead ignorance if "caught", only showing for fun afterall.

Unless you intend to show at the top level I would agree that the best thing is to keep quiet and act dumb! The only thing I would say about spayed bitches is sometimes their "bits" do get quite small compared with an entire bitch. Not obvious in hairy breeds but might be more so in a smooth coated breed like a dane, but I am sure you will be fine. Enjoy your shows!

She has very good bloodlines, sire wasnt shown(he was sold to aunt because he was her favorite out of litter and was too much of a "pet" to get his head around ringcraft but his sire won pretty much everything he went to) but TBH dont think I have the time or patiance to try and get her to top level.

She is far too bright for her own good and I think ringcraft would engage the grey matter well and a few fun shows through the summer would be great fun for us both.
Now if she was going to be doing agility or obdiance I would get competative....but just dont get that buzz from showing.

To be honest, you probably wouldn't enjoy it much at the top level. The main reason I quit showing my Shepherds was because people seemed more interested in winning than the dogs themselves. At the time I was showing at top level there was a lot of controversy about people withholding water from their dogs so they would show better. Very complicated reasons but basically GSDs are gaited for longer than I think any other breed and the thinking seemed to be that they would perform better (and also if the poor things were desperate for water they would be much keener to get to their owners running round the ring with a bowl of water!). This is not hearsay, I saw it happen many times. I have to say I am pretty sure this doesn't happen any more, and was only done by a few exhibitors.

Anyway back to your Aunts dane, hopefully if you show at local level you will have fun with her and she will enjoy herself. By the way I did know someone who competed a dane at agility!

Not in a million years, just not for me.
Anything I do with animals is for fun, might be hard work along the way but the primary reason is fun.

I don't have any pics myself, I am sure there were some published, I will see if I can find a link. Re rough collies ears, I know of people who put chewing gum inside the ears to get them to tip over, not particularly cruel I spose but not very ethical either.

Calangel, when did your Mum used to show, was it over 15 years ago, I might know her or her dogs, particularly if we shared an opinion on the d**k heads!

Lol.....yeah it was over 15 years ago...she also went to crufts I think...can remember seeng a pic of her with a shepherd there.....I will have been going on for more like 20 years ago..even more......she used to breed shepherds
shocked.gif
(can u believe that) she said she is now paying for her sins.....I think its one of the reasons she is working so hard with rescue animals...she only bred a few litters for show/obedience purpose....she kept the majority...we had a about 14 shepherds at one time

I showed all over the country really, furthest we went was up to Perthshire in Scotland , in a mini traveller if anyone remembers them, must have been mad! Used to go to all the big Ch shows, GSD League, BAGSD and more recently the 2 day shows, did your Mum show there? I used to show at Crufts and my Mum judged Shepherds there, but its not a show I used to enjoy. Fine as a spectator but I honestly think dogs are the last thing on the KCs mind, it is so hot and stuffy, with those awful shavings exercise areas! I don't think I've got any pictures of me standings, my then OH used to handle them, would love to see pics of yr Mum tho and see if I recognise her. You're in the North East aren't you, used to have quite a lot of friends in that area.
