start with a few locals - you don't even have to enter any classes - you can just go and look around, with your horse with you, then pick a fun class or two and go from there.
Of you do this, please pay for entry to at least one class, the organisers put a lot of effort into organising shows and I think it's quite rude to just show up to an organised event and not pay towards it.

Our very local shows all insist that any horse or pony attending the show must be entered.
Anyone bringing an un entered animal is immediately banned and has to leave.
Rightly so, the liability insurance will only cover exhibitors.

OP, enter a class, go to show and have a go.

Go to a few of your local shows as a spectator, or volunteer as a steward once you get the gist of things. You'll get the idea of which classes your horse would suit, and you can always talk to the competitors to get some advice. At least, in my local, there's usually lots of in-hand people, relaxing between classes, who know their stuff and are happy to talk.

Yes, go on foot to some local shows and study what the handlers are wearing and how they have their horses standing and trotting out correctly. Look at how the horses are presented - very clean and brushed basically.

There are books you can buy about showing, or even borrow from the library. It is really worth practicing well at home so that your horse stands correctly and leads nicely to show himself off as well as possible.
