In a couple of months time I am being treated to some showjumps. Anysort has got to bean the barrels and poles I currently have but was wondering weather people rate wooden or plastic?

We have the choice of either buying them, or getting a friend of the family who is a proffessional builder to make them. He is non horsey but could easily follow plans on how to make them.

I would want a few fillers in the jump set. Daft question maybe but I don't know. What's a standard height for fillers? And if I had a brick wall?

thanks. Any help and info will be appreciated!

Unfortunatly I'm in North wales and no where near any jump companies!

Plastic jumps are more conveniant, they don't rust, don't need painting, and are very long lasting. Some horses don't respect plastic poles though (you can get heavy plastic poles though), so maybe wooden poles would be a good idea to get. You can get fillers in different sizes, maybe about 80cm might be ideal? Would it be expensive to get them made for you? Plastic jumps are quite expensive, but worth the money IMO.

Plastic are much better. You can leave them out in all weathers without damaging them, but wood usually flakes. They look smarter then painted wood, plus, they're much easier to move around!

Professional would be best, but non-horsy would be cheaper. Depends on the budget! Though the other advantage of non-horsy would be that you could design the jumps yourself, which is always fun

I got my wooden ones rom a guy called James Allwood near Bangor on Dee. For about £300 I got 8 12ft poles,4 5ft wings,4 6ft wings and a pair of fillers. They are excellent quality and he will make you more or less whatever you need. I will try to find the details for you.

We've got a good set of plastic ones and they are excellent to lug about, they always look smart and don't need any maintenance work unlike wooden show jumps. Derby House have a good selection of plastic jumps along with all types of fillers and walls, i think they list all of the measurements on the website.

After being arena party and having to work with wooden and plastic jumps. i would advise to get wooden if looked after properly they will last for years. The plastic jumps, I have found that some of the wings have broken rather easily and if it has been windy sometimes the poles can blow of!!

I would also think about getting them made, you can then choose your own designs, heights of fillers and will be a lot cheaper!!

If you are on a budget then either build or have someone build you jumps out of wood. They are very easy to build & if you use reclaimed timber they are very cheap to make. Poles are easy to get hold of. The most expensive part are the cups.

One tip is don't use paint on them, I built a set & I sprayed them using fence preservative, it comes in brown, blue, red, green. it's quick, easy & doesn't flake like paint. Fillers & water trays are just as easy.

Having got both, I would now only ever replace mine with plastic.

If you calculate your time / effort into maintaining wooden jumps, you'd be better off working at MacDonalds and buying plastic!!

My wooden poles painted 3 years ago are now all flaking. My latest trick is to cover them in tape, but haven't tested to see how long this will work.
