It's a bit of a random question but in these credit crunch times I am investigating alternative bedding types and I wondered if you could use shredded paper along with your normal bedding?

The reason I ask is because the OH and I have been having a massive clear out and we've shredded loads of bin bags worth of junk mail, old statements, etc and it occured to us that we might be able to use it in my horse's bed, not as a whole bed but mixed in with the Dixon's Dustless chopped straw bedding.

What do you think, would it work?

You could do. I wouldn't use it with straw as the horse may eat it. You also need to go a bit carefull if your horse has any cuts or anything. You don't want ink getting into places it shouldn't. It is a pain in the bum to muck out as well! In the long run, you may get fed up with it...

Thanks for that.

I use the really finely chopped straw and it's treated so he doesn't eat it anyway.

Good thinking about the cuts and ink getting into them, ouch, I wouldn't want that to happen to my boy!

We've got 5 or 6 bin bags worth of shredding so I think I might try one of the bags of shredding and see how much of a hassle it is to muck out. I see your point though!!

Yes you could - probably best mixed with something because otherwise it 'balls up'! Paper cuts shouldn't be a problem as long as the paper is quite soft (ie not shiny magazines) but watch for staples!

Yes, I've done that (with DD too!) and it was fine. A bit annoying with the diff bedding types in but worth it for the savings!

I just had to be a bit careful, as mine was coming from work so it wasn't always me that shredded it, but if you've done it yourself you'll know there aren't staples etc in it.

I've been very vigilant about staples so that won't be a problem.

Right, I think you've all made up my mind, I'm defo going to have a bash at it this weekend. Just hope it's not so fiddly that it pee's off my sharers!!

It's not going to be forever, just until we've used up all the bags of shredding.

Oh and I was thinking that it's also another good deterrant against identity theft - no one's going to want to sift through our muck heap to get at my old shredded bank statements that are covered with you know what!!!

hiya, i really like shredded paper as an alternative. I was completely against it but then saw it used/used it myself at a particular yard- now I'm a convert

As long as there are no staples in it then go for it. We use it on top of rubber mats and then have straw on top of that. The paper captures the wee perfectly and it's really easy to muck out as it becomes like papier mache and all the wet lifts up in one easy go.

Environmentally friendly and just like you, we get ours free too. So well worth it.
