shredded paper or shredded cardboard for bedding??

shredded paper! i loved it! my boy was filthy and it was the most absorbant bedding iv ever used, it just kinda goes into a paper mashay (sp) that you just chuck out. Its fairly cheap. My YO uses bank note paper that comes in big bags. Its £6 a bag. I got mine for free from dunelm. They shredded all their paper and bagged it and i used to collect it. Made a lovely deep fluffy bed :-) i will be using paper from now on when mine are stabled.

It can be very heavy bedding when its wet and it needs careful mucking out, or you are left with a sodden mess. Also, take care with the supplier, you don't want to have paper that has staples in it. i think there are better alternatives than paper and cardboard.

I used to use shredded paper for my boy. It's fantastic. Makes a nice fluffy bed and absorbs the wet really well. I used to get mine from work, it was all the confidential stuff that had been shredded.

I use shredded paper under my shavings. I think its brilliant (and free from work) the only problem is that on its own it does fly around alot (we have open fronted boxes). Therefore I now put shavings on top of the paper because one day I got to the yard and it looked like we had had a blizzard. Took ages to sweep it all up - not what I needed at 6am before work.

Very absorbant with my two swampy ponies.

I am thinking of moving to cardboard instead of shavings so am interested in any feedback those users have.

I've been using cardboard bedding for 2 years, having previously used
straw. I LOVE IT!! The cardboard isn't shredded. It's cut into small squares
about 3/4 to 1 inch-ish in size. It banks up beautifully and makes for a
lovely, fluffy bed. It's dust free, odorless, absorbent and economical. It is
always available (not dependent on weather conditions to process) and
makes for a much smaller muck heap. I load all of the muck onto a huge
grain trailer. When I was using straw, the trailer had to be emptied every
2 weeks, but with the cardboard, it can go almost a month before emptying.

I know this sounds like an advert, but I really I don't work for any bedding
company. I have 5 Shire horses. They took to it immediately and, best of
all, they don't eat it. I can't recommend this bedding highly enough. It
works for me. I hope this helps in your decision.

Get paper free from work, which works well. Tried cardboard once, and hated it. It was difficult to muck out, and I didn't find it as absorbent as shavings. Now I use shavings with paper under it, if work has any for me.
