hi ya, my pony seemed to have had an allergic reaction to feed but we took him off that, but he still is covered in little lumps all over, and is incredibly itchy still (no improvements since last post)

i think we are going to have to inject him with cortasone but one of its side effects is laminitis - my pony is part native...

have any of you used cortasone?
shud i just continue with bran mashs and espom salts?
what about boiling nettles and feeding them to him?

sorry bout the questions

My horse had to have cortisone injections in his hocks a couple of months ago. Was told about the possibility of laminitis, but was told the risk was very tiny. I think it is like any drug, they all have POSSIBLE side effects. It is just a case of weighing up the advantages and disadvantages.

Edited to add: Mac has been absolutely fine since his injections!

he thought we shud keep giving him bran mashes and see if he is any better, and only inject as a last resort...

our vet is very good though, and he will always tell us the pros and cons and let us make up our minds. we have an ode in 10 days and then dublin show, so he needs to be sound and hopefully less itchy by then

My laminitic pony got cortisone injections in her hocks and had no adverse effects. And she is incredibly sensitive and gets lami at the drop of a hat.

Having known a horse with steriod induced lami i personally wouldnt use them but i guess you have to decide if the lumps and itching are so bad they are reducing the quality of life for your pony!
