I know this isn't the point, but this video has made me feel so much better. I've got a little pony who, when she's super excited, also does that buck/kick thing in my direction. I've been really worrying that this is some sort of red flag, and I'm handling her completely wrong, and I need to get on top of it etc etc (my anxiety is spiralling out of control in general just now anyway, and in my head this always very quickly becomes "I don't deserve a pony" ?)

So it's just a massive relief to see other nice, normal ponies doing the same thing! (Ps I have seen her properly backing up and kicking another horse, and it's obviously a totally different thing. But still)

I'm so lucky that my boys have fun, but are very protective of me. Trust is the key. Have you thought about trying Join Up?

My cob also does this occasionally. He was particularly prone to it when turning out, so I trained him to wait for a treat dropped on the ground after release giving me a chance to vacate the area before he set off as I was worried about flying loose stones or other accidents. I've owned him 12 years and he's a total sweetheart generally and has never made contact with me (or injured me in any way on the ground or in the saddle, except for standing on a toe once, touch wood). I have also done join up and plenty of in-hand stuff with him (keen IH member, he came on one of their courses with me). So I don't think its necessarily a red flag provided they are always doing it far enough away there is absolutely no chance of making contact.

Thank you both. She's always a good distance away, it's never an ears back kind of thing, I know if she wanted to kick me she could! I just worry that it's the first step of her displaying dominance towards me, or she's at least testing me, and that I'm not handling it properly and it's going to spiral. She nearly always does it when I'm moving the electric fence and she's just excited for the grass, so I'm the opposite side of the fence and I just ignore her completely. She's generally well mannered in all other situations, but I'm a massive worrier at the best of times ?
