I took on a SI pony at the end of last summer so haven't been doing this long, but today I put him in his full Snuggy set because it's starting to warm up here & I want to protect him before he starts itching.

I hate seeing him in it, poor little man, and I'm a bit worried about what I do if it really tips it down. I know Snuggy say the rugs dry quickly but would it be best to take the body part off if there's heavy rain and use his rain sheet with the hood/neck part? I don't like the thought of the fringe bit in his eyes if it's really wet but I know I have to leave that on now regardless of weather :(

If anyone give me any tips with regards to the rugging they'd be most appreciated.

My boy is in a Boett and if it is forecast to be heavy rain, then I just put a lightweight turnout over the top of his boett without any problems.

If it is too warm to do that then I leave him without the t/o, but the boett rug does dry quickly (I imagine the snuggy hood one would do too) but I do have a spare rug that I can put him into if he was completely sopping so that although he would be wet, the rug would be dry on him....

I have to leave my SI rug on at all times unless riding as his SI is too severe to just use a turnout with a neck piece but I guess it would depend on how bad your pony suffers with it??

Hope that helps??

My pony has been ok as long as the temperature is reasonable, if its reasonably ok the rug dries quickly and the pony is fine even if it takes a while to dry

The only time I worry is when its cold AND wet in which case I throw over a rainsheet so his body is at least dry, that goes over the snuggy rug so the rainsheet can be whipped off with minimum of faffing

We leave the snuggy on all the time, they dry quickly. Only put a rain sheet on top if weather really bad. We cut the fringe bit off as pony finds it annoying.

Thanks everybody, I'll put the rain sheet on over the top then if it's going to throw it down I just think he would be a bit wrapped up in all the layers.

Dustygirl this is the first time I've put him in the Snuggy, I took him on last autumn & so had him in a DeMeulenlampf for a while but I really hate it, the fit is terrible hence the Snuggy this year! I have a 2nd Snuggy hood which I can use with the DeM as a spare when washing or drying out the Snuggy set.

I didn't have him in a hood last autumn because his face and ears were so bad he would have rubbed right through it so I just covered him in camrosa which did the trick in the short term. If he really complains about the fringe I'll chop it off too but the eye holes are quite big so I think he'll get midged without it.

I hated rugging him today and am wishing I didn't take him on, please tell me it gets easier :o

Don't leave him without his rug on! It only needs a few midgy bites to set off the itch, scratch, itch cycle and it will then get worse. Ponies are pretty hardy so unless it is really cold and windy I wouldn't worry about it getting wet - they do dry very quickly.
