I have just been given a 15 month old siamese who is coming to live with me and my 2 year old daughter in our new house at the stables.

She needs to be neutered and has thus far been an indoor cat only. I would like her to be able to go outside and enjoy the freedom, we are not near a road and there are plenty of rats and mice about to deal with! Just wondering how I should best go about letting her out once she has been neutered and has settled.

Also, any other advice about the breed, feeding, toys etc please. I have had many cats but never a siamese so would like to make sure I'm getting it right for her!

Hi

I had a siamese boy who sadly died this year at the grand age of 22. I got him as a 6 year old and kept him in for about 6-8 weeks before letting him have access to a cat flap.

It was his choice to go out or stay in. He went in and out as he pleased, just like my other cats. He was never a hunter at all but liked sunbathing.

As a breed they are known to be high maintenance, very vocal and loving. They are the most brilliant breed and i miss my lad every day, he was a total character.

Its ideal that you are not near a road so after the inital moving in 6-8 weeks, i would let her have the freedom to choose. Good luck with her, im sure she will be amazing! :)

I'm sorry about your boy, they leave such a big hole when they go, but 22 was an amazing age.

Thanks for the info, I am really excited, I've missed having a cat about the place but didn't want one living where we have been, was too worried about the roads and other cats. I'm not sure how the terriers are going to take it, the old lady will just keep herself to herself but I suspect the younger boy will be terrified of her!

I used to have two siamese then one sadly died, we were so worried about her sister who was left as they were inseperable. However she's completely come out of her shell now and is a loving, affectionate cat. She goes in and out as she pleases, and is too much of a hunter...always bringing in dead mice! One thing I would say about siamese is that from my experience, if they want attention and affection then they will come to you, rather than you go to them! Oh and they are very noisy!

Thanks, He was brilliant.

They will probably play! Siamese are very dog like! :)

Lovely cats, I have never had the privilege to own one , but my auntie bred them.

I have no real advice except they seem to think they are dogs in cats clothing LOL

Good luck with your new addition

I've never had a Siamese, but lived with a friend who had one for a while. Lovely cat.

We adopted two yearling cats that had never been outside. We started encouraging them to go outside in lovely sunny weather when we were out in the garden. We just basically left the door open. They were very shy at first. We then shut them out for an hour or so a day. They weren't happy at first, we have a silly pic of them hanging off the door handle wanting to come back in. Within a day or two they were happy as larry and ridding the valley of field mice. Nowadays they hang off the inside handle desperate to go out.

I love Siamese and used to have a half bred who Was my most favourite cat ever. He was the gentlest cat ever and never ever scratched or used his claws on humans.
My friend has 3 Siamese and 1 oriental. I stayed at her place a while back and left the bedroom door open. I spent the night being in what I can only describe as a cat party. They took turns sleeping in my chest so I'd wake to find a slightly different face looking at me interspersed with the odd scuffle about whose turn it was to sleep on human. They then went downstairs and upset the poor dog who woke us up with his barking to be saved; they steal his bed and run all over him poor doggy. Affectionate and playful and very noisy! I'm sure you will really enjoy your new friend but get ear plugs :D

We are owned by a very naughty vocal opinionated chocolate point.
They are the most wonderful cats, although often not really like 'normal' cats (if there is such a thing!).
Ours plays fetch and prefers human company to that of our other cat. He is very quick to let us know if he wants something - he can almost talk. It's almost like having a gremlin child than a cat!
He doesn't go out. Having lost my previous Siamese when he was hit by a car on a supposedly quiet 20mph limit single track country lane, we had reservations about letting him out. as he grew up it became very obvious that he wouldn't be suited to the outdoor life at all! He's perfectly happy indoors - and is not at all keen to venture out.

Just be aware that they are high maintenance and can get naughty / destructive if they are bored. Oh and did I mention how vocal they are?!

They are the most fantastic creatures - I can't imagine life without a Siamese!

There is a yard cat where I work and he does my head in, constantly yowling at you until you throw his ball. I usually end up tying a toy to my wheelbarrow with a bit of baler twine so he can chase it while I muck out. He is totally unlike any other cat I have ever met - needy, in your face and pushy. Fun though, in a tiring way!
He loves lungeing the horses, he swings off the lunge whip. Luckily they are used to him.

And I missed your 'have moved' threads, the last one I saw you were really fed up and thinking about it. I am so happy for you.

Agree with all the above, but would like to add that Siamese/oriental/burmese cats tend to wander further than other breeds. So do make sure you are far enough from the road.
They also become VERY attached to people and places,so re-homing a young adult might test your patience. (When we moved house with my oriental he turned quite vicious and attacked me. It took lot of gentle reassurance to bring him around. He had a wonderful few years but then sadly went the half mile to the quiet but fast country road and got himself killed by a car.)
I would suggest leaving it as long as possible before offering outside as an option, just in case she decides to try and go back to her old home. Once she has 'claimed' you expect some serious fun.
