I know this isn't really CR but... I still haven't managed to sell my saddle and definitely can't afford another until then. There seem to be NO saddle fitters around here who BUY second hand saddles. I plan to try the guy I bought mine off at weekend but I think he will only part exchange and doesn't stock the make I'm after and the only other make he stocked last time that I got on with was Prestige, which I can't afford, and Dan wasn't keen on anyway.
Are there any saddle fitters now that take second hand saddles on at all? I have tried saddles direct and the amount they said they would be likely to get for me was a joke :( If there are any willing to part ex. that stock Ideals that could also be good... as long as they aren't completely the other end of the country!! :o

Stuck. Currently riding bareback & borrowing a saddle for lessons & comps! :o :p

Do you have a local tack shop with a second hand section? One to me does, and it works very well. I have found that if you price saddle competitively it will be sold. I have sold two through this, and a newer one via preloved website.

You could try Bridlepath International. I dont know what their range of places is like that they will fit too, but it certainly has to be worth a call. They will pex and sell Ideals.

Horsequest is good. Ebay is at least quick, but the % fees between ebay and paypal are high.

What is it you have to sell?

I was told recently by a saddler that with the event of changeable gullets the bottom dropped out of the second hand saddle market unless you have the upper range of saddle makes. I've sold three on ebay for far less that they were worth because no one would take them in part exchange and offer me any where near what they were worth.

its worth trying your local riding clubs etc but I got bored in the end lugging them around for someone to try and then say they couldnt afford them and they could get it cheaper on ebay !!!

No :( Only one that did really was Crewe - which now doesn't take them. May give preloved a try as have heard things sell well there! :) Thanks

Horse Quest - I sold mine in less than a week. Price it realistically and they sell !

Have had it on BD & Ebay at 50% of what I bought it for (have only had it a year and it looks practically good as new!) with lots of Q's asked and watchers but no sale. Will have a look at what Horse Quest charges for ads now :) thanks

I will contact them, thanks! :)

A farrington dressage, not exactly highly sought after!

Sounds familiar! It's a shame :( I've really gone off the changeable gullet saddles and their arrival really does seem to have killed the secondhand market, I wish I could buy a secondhand saddle though - there's still none of the one I need around! :o

Depends what money you are looking for - Farrington are popular with those who know about them but it's not a 'trendy' make. They do sell on eBay but people seem to sometimes be over ambitious price wise! I have watche a few go on repeatedly. Is trade in not possible perhaps? Most Saddlers round here will take in part ex against a new saddle?

Did you buy it new? If so a drop of 50% is probably about what you are looking at from new to second hand unfortunately. The market is pretty dead apart from the top end at the moment - dressage saddles especially apparently :(

The Saddle Consultant will.

Heather does our saddle checks and I've bought a couple of saddles from her. She bought a Jessica dressage saddle direct from me in part ex against another one. She also took 3 saddles that didn't fit anything to try a sell on. She's managed to sell 2 for us and taken a cut. The third hsan't sold yet. That was last summer. I really rate her she provides an excellent thorough service and spends time making sure you and horse are happy without trying to push a particular product.

I feel your pain. Due to a horse which keeps changing shape I've also been trying to sell a practically new Ideal saddle, but nobody seems interested at the moment. I would have thought that the second hand market would be popular now with people trying to save money and not buy new.
Ho hum!

Part of the problem though, is that so many saddles are so "messed with" now, it's almost impossible to find something second hand that a) you can predict the fit of and b) can be easily returned to "neutral" off the rack shape to be refitted.

Plus, oddly, saddle fitters would prefer to sell new. ;)

Ive got 2 on preloved at the moment, both quality saddles (GFS pro event, and bates caprilli with cair and changeable gullets) and have so far had messers asking for pix then not getting back to me, or silly offers of £100.

Horse and hound does free advertising upto £500, ive got mine on there too

http://www.firecrackersaddlery.com/Sell-Your-Saddlery-To-Us.html this place buys outright, or takes p.x but obviously offers a low value as they have to have profit from it

Where abouts are you? I sold my farrington dressage saddle (8yr old) in my local tack shop (lancs) for £450 compared to about £150 which they are selling for on eBay. It's not a well known make so tricky so sell off an advert without people trying them on.

I bought my lovely (summwhat cursed, horse went lame as soon as I bought it!) saddle off Firecracker. Ride-away buy and offer what seems to be a reasonable courier charge

Yes - have listed it at half of what I payed :/ Now looking into treeless saddles again as at least when I can afford one it ought to be the last! :p hmm. Trying one soon anyway...

I'm in Cheshire, near Crewe :) Sounds better than other places!!

I lurrrrve Farrington Dressage saddles but saddly they dont fit my horse hence having to sell the one I had when I bought him.
It was a good few years ago now but Michelle Miller based in Lancs took mine off me and sold it for more than I paid for it! I dont know if she still does it but may be worth a try. I didnt get the money until she sold it, which was a few weeks but it was better than it sitting in my house waiting for me to sell it.

Oh, I didnt buy a saddle off her but did get her to check a saddle fit on my horse at the time.

Oh again, Horsebits in Ramsbottom take 2nd hand saddles and sell on a commission basis... just a thought.
Good Luck

Reckon somebody could do a good trade in fitting second hand saddles as there must be many of us who buy new when used would do then store our old saddle as too much hassle to sell and want decent return. I have 17 inch ideal narrow gp in wardrobe plus a couple of older saddles lying around

My horse much prefers my old Farrington, I am riding in it again and cant sell my top of the range Albion SLK Ultima which is only 18 months old, at less that half price - used it for a month!! so i feel your pain, if only people realised how good these saddles are, they would snap your hand off! i'm looking for a Farrington event saddle 17" wide, is yours a dressage model?

I wouldn't bother with Bridlepath International. I asked them to sell a saddle which they'd fitted brand new less than a year old and one which I suspected never fit properly. They said they would - minus 40% commission. Told them to stick it.

I don't think it's the make etc just the time of year, I'm trying to sell a lovely barnsby saddle at the moment that's been valued at £500, I'm only asking £ 350 and have had no interest :(

I might email firecracker saddlery :)
