Last week 2 young men/teenagers bought a baby rabbit from the local Pets at Home store, took it to the park, released it and set their staffordshire bull terrier on it, which ripped it to pieces. It happened during the day when families and children were around, when confronted they told people they were training the dog to kill. They told some crying girls that if they didn't shut up they'd set the dog on them too. They were caught and the police and RSPCA were involved, but apparently what they did is not illegal

I think it's just so cruel and don't know how anyone could do that, and so irresponsible to 'train' a dog to do that, the same week as the trial of the grnadma who's son's pitbull killed that little girl

It just makes my skin crawl, what is wrong with people?!

This reminds me of something i read in the hunting forum, how someone had found a baby fox and alot of the suggestions were throw it to the hounds...

wat disgusting behaviour wat will there excuse be when it savages someone?????they wanna be taught a lesson make them the poor little rabbit out with the big cats as far as im concerned.as you can tell i cant abide any cruelty it makes me so mad and ashamed to be human sometimes.

completely different situation (i was one of those "throw it to the hounds" people)

that rabbit was a domestic animal, complete innocent, and what those two subhumans did was a disgusting act of animal cruelty IMO

I don't think anyone agreed with that comment they just said what it would be a quick kill...which it would have.

Whether you buy a pet rabbit or you course wild ones the death by a dog is a damn quick one.

is that not technically hunting with dogs? Thought that was banned???

[/ QUOTE ]

No its not classed as hunting with dogs and no hunting is not banned.

Pre ban around here it was thought as bad form to run a hare anyway...we used to have a hare in one of our fields! Lovely creatures.

What few people know is very few hares are caught during hare coursing at the Waterloo cup and the like.

Yeah they are nice..think Tinks got one the other day though

but tis silly...the differentiation (sp? lol) rats/mice rabbits/hares

Where's your info from?

I find it hard to believe that if the above statement were true the boys couldn't be charged with assault

LOL! Hence why I was asking where the info was from. Because to my mind, if the OP was totally accurate, then there ought to be no problem charging them with assualt.

It was front page of the local paper last week, I looked on the internet for a link for you all but couldn't find anything about it. I had heard about it the day after it happened from a friend, and couldn't believe what I was told, but then it was in the paper the next week with exactly the same information.

Maybe the boys were too young?

Just goes to show how this country is going I think. No wonder the kids are growing up and bloody killing people and animals alike....disgusting.

I am a member of Saluki Rescue and have three rescues of my own.

It is illegal to hunt with dogs. Period. I cannot believe that the RSPCA did nothing to stop this.

I think it could be, you got your information wrong. I know that it is very easy to be stopped by police and have your car searched if they see several sighthounds in the back. They look for things used in live coursing, and they aren't particularly pleasant about it. But of course, they are very relieved to see our neutered, microchipped, collared and tagged hounds once they know we are just going for a run on the beach.

Oh rubbish. Both acts are just as cruel - in what sense is a baby rabbit any more innocent than a baby fox cub?
