Hi . My poor mare has been extreamly lame for a while . My vet told me it was a pedal bone fracture. After treating her for that and no success she has gone to a specialist vets for another mri and x rays . These show no injury to the pedal bone but near the top of her side bone is a fracture . Exactly where the heat and swelling is . She was in bar shoes with heel risers and gel pads. Anyway the specialist vet has removed these and the improvement was massive . She looked nearly sound in walk . He said shoes are not letting her feet expand and heal . So we have been sent away with bute . 2 saschets a day and 30ml of karadox a day . She is to have 6 weeks paddock rest in a paddock the size of 4 stables on flat soft ground and I need to cold hose the fracture site twice a day . After the 6 weeks she's going back for rays to see how it's going . Has anyone had any experience with side bone fractures ? Thanks in advance x

Oh wow, your specialist vet sounds like they actually understand how a horse's foot works.....a rare luxury. Side bone is falsely created bone, over the original cartilage and has developed due to imbalance in the way the foot is cared for. So that's your number one priority, know what correct balance looks like, and make sure who ever you employ is excellent at this. Secondly, because it is false bone, it can break, de-ossify and disappear with good care, leaving a sound horse. Even with less than perfect care, side bone rarely causes long term lameness.

Good luck.

Thank you . It's so nice to actually hear someone tell me to take the shoes off . She's amazing bare foot . Really good feet . She's never been happy with shoes so when they showed me the bar shoes I instinctively new this wouldn't help her. But you listen to your vet and farrier. The difference in her is massive not just her lamness but in herself .

Mine has massive and I do mean really massive sidebone. When first diagnosed 10 + years ago tried sidebone shoes (wider at outside edge) pads etc but nothing any good. Farrier was against shoes off but I insisted and she was immediately more comfortable. She is much much better in cold weather and on soft ground, I also hose feet in hot weather (also much better uphill) but was never really ridden again even after extensive turning away. Wouldnt be at all surprised if mine had fractures of sidebone, she didn't originally on xrays but in years since she has been bit worse each year and bute makes little or no difference, vet thinks its more mechanical lameness.

Good luck with yours, hopefully it will settle and come good.
