Side Bone

Hiya,

My cob x was diagnosed with sidebone in his left fore in 2008 after 3 months of intermittant lameness. He then had 3 months off and 3 courses of Tildren to try to harden off the sidebone. He came back into work sound, but we've always been careful about hacking out and him generally being on hard ground.

For the past month, he's been getting progressively lame in his right fore and its exactly the same symptoms as before. Shows up very obviously in trot even on soft indoor school suface. On the initial x rays in 2008, there was some evidence of side bone in his right but I would have thought that would have hardened by now.

Phoned the vet and asked if we could book him in for investigation (money is an issue as if it is sidebone we don't know if it'll be covered by insurance). Vet said it could potentially be sidebone going up into fetlock.

So, my question is whether anybody out there has a horse with side bone who has suffered from lameness with it. Can it reoccur like this? Can it spread? Has your horse continued to be lame even once the sidebone has formed?

He's a chunky monkey type with a lot of bone so he's not the type to go lame after a bit of knock (unlike my tb who steps on a stone and thinks his legs fallen off!!!). There's absolutely no evidence of anything else- no heat, no lumps, no bumps and nothing to suggest lami.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!!!

xx
