I have bveen told that canvas/fabric side reins are not great because they dont have the weight needed. So I guess I am talking about leather ones. Which are the best - with or without elastic and thos with a doughnut ring or buckles?

It is very much personal preference, some people prefer all leather ones as they say the horse leans on the stretching elastic, others say they prefer the elastic/ doughnut ones as they have give and take to simulate a riders hand and the leather ones can go loose then snatch at the mouth, with me it depends on the horse and stage of training, but i'm not keen on the doughnut ones as the doughnuts seem to bounce and i think this must snatch at the mouth.

I personally prefer the canvas ones with the elastic and buckles

Don't get the buckle ones as if they stretch they can become uneven - the other ones with the sliding thingy (technical term) are easier to keep even.
