side reins!

after a recent "debate" on hho i was wondering your opinions on them,
are they really the death traps everyone makes out to be if used properly?

i agree...but i do make sure that people know how to use them properly...am training 3 people to lunge at present but dont let them loose with the side reins yet...

I'm having to learn to use them to do my BHS stage 2. My horse doesn't need them, but it's interesting to see the difference in other horses with and without them.
I guess there is always the safety factor but you could probably argue that about most training aids, couldn't you?

I think side reins are a useful tool for training a horse provided they are used correctly and not for riding round in (unless on the lunge of course)
