Side reins?

Basically today someone rode a girls horse, girl wasnt there but told them to ride it in a dutch gag fair enough as its apparantly a bugger to hack out. So She put that on but also put side reins on aswell. Am I wrong in thinking that this shouldnt be done?

As you could see it totally interfered with the action of the bit. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
The rein was on the second hole, and the side reins was on the snaffle so it was a bit crossed if you understand?

sounds very odd.
i only lunge with side reins. never tried riding in them, that's what my hands and arms are for

Well I couldnt see the effect it had, it looked very wrong in my opinion, just baffled me and thought someone could enlighten me?

well at least the side reins were on the snaffle ring and not lower... still sounds stupid anyway. I wouldnt ride in side reins, too harsh

I know people who ride in side reins, but TBH I don't see the point either.

To be honest I dont ride in either, just wondering what peoples views on it, I think its stupid aswell.

Riding in side reigns....ummm. To be honest I worry enough about using them whilst lungeing but understand that this is beneficial to simulate a contact. i cannot see any advantage by riding in them unless the rider is a muppet and just sits there and wants to look good. Very worrying. x
