Hi
I am due to lunge a horse in side reins tomorrow except embarassingly after many times over the years watching horses lunged, I've never had to put them on myself. Help please? I know they are attached to the bit ring obviously and some people attach them between the legs to the girth (I think) or higher up near the saddle flap. How do they fix on?
Thanks!

attach them to the girth straps on the saddle (unless your using a roller, then just attach them to appropriate D-ring) go under all three straps, over the last strap then back under first two.. so the last strap holds them if this makes sense? but make sure your girth is attached to the strap the side rein is!! there are a few variations of this, but aslong as their secure and equal you will be fine! hope this makes sense!! x

a bit of string around the girth at the appropriate location if you don't have a d ring etc in the right location always does the trick!

Ditto this suggestion. It's also useful for starting a large horse, when you want the side reins started off long. My young filly's only 16.2 but normal f/s side reins are simply too short for her at this stage of her training (IMO anyway.) So out comes the string :D

I had to read this twice but it makes sense now. Phew!

What about if you want your horse ot move 'long and low'? Wouldn't you put the side reins on a little lower?

(wouldnt use string or bale twine as it can rub)

Just for the record; Nah, don't find baling twine rubs at all when attached to the girth straps or D'ings on the saddle or with a training roller! And I have the MOST sensitive skinned WB on the planet. It simply isn't an issue, honestly. Mind you, I'd rather not have the use twine at all but none of the side-reins I've got (and I've a few types in F/S) are long enough for my liking.

:)
