Side saddle queries

After doing a side saddle course this summer my sister and I have decided to pursue it - to bring some elegance to our riding in our old age. First side saddle arrived yesterday to much girlish? glee. It has a little pouch attached that comes complete with a small stirrup inside - What is this for? Everyone who knows my sister says it's for her mobile!

Also I would love to buy her a cane for Xmas, but am unsure what size or where to buy it. It needs to be through the internet as we both live in Spain.

The little pouch you refer to was designed for the use of a groom who rode the horse to a meet, and as it was a male groom, he actually rode astride, using the second stirrup for balance. Ideally, the whip should be lond, as it replaces the off-side leg in giving a 'signal' to the horse.

I should also have mentioned that it was also useful for the lady, if she was tired, to use the second stirrup to rest her right leg after a long day's hunting, enabling her to ride astride.

I got a side saddle cane out of one of the derby house stores but this was about 9 years ago!! I did side saddle for about 5 years with the TB. We did everything jumping , dressage, showing even games aside! Good luck if youve caught the bug itl be a lot of fun!!
