I have an 8yo 17h draught type horse that I usee for general riding and a little jumping. He suddenly went acutely lame one morning, classified as over 5/10ths. He has been on 4 weeks box rest, and has improved to 1/10th lame. Yesterday he had his second visit to an equine hospital, where he was Xrayed. His Xrays show sidebones on both front feet. Medial and lateral.

The vet seemed dissmissive of the sidebones and their implication in the lameness.

My question is, are sidebones something you would expect to see in a heavy horse? and should their implications be dissmissed?

I have read lots of contradicting articles on the web. Some stating that they are not clinically significant, and normal in draught horses. Others seem full of doom and gloom for future soundness.

Any thoughts, opinions are welcome.

In my experience, they're either caused by poor hoof balance over a long period, or trauma. Given that you have them both medially and laterally I would err on the former.

Sidebone cause pain whilst they're forming, but once formed, and stable, they settle down and stop being painful. Feel them, if they're warm, they're still forming, if cold, they're old and settled.

I hope this helps.
