joey had xrays on his foot and it turns out he has side bones which is probably causing his lameness, so he has to have corrective shoes.

anybody have any advice/experience of this.

My mare was very lame on her near fore in 2005. In the end the investigations showed a large, previously fractured sidebone. Surgery was mentioned, but the success rate was not fantastic. I decided to turn her away and see how it went. The vet wasn't optimistic, but suggested that I try lunging her 6 months on to see if the lameness had reduced at all. I tried this 7 months on and to my great joy and the vet's suprise, she was sound!

We discussed remedial shoeing and my vet worked with my farrier for a couple of sets, then the farrier suggested that we try her barefoot as she has such good feet. The vet conceded that the remedial shoeing was just an attempt to mimic a bare foot, so we all agreed to give it a try. She has been barefoot for a year now and totally sound (touches wood).

Since your vet is suggesting remedial shoeing at this stage and not surgery, maybe your horse's sidebone is ot as bad as Flora's. So hopefully you won't have as much trouble as we did. In any event, it seems that once we can get it settled, sidebone isn't a huge problem to deal with when compared to Navicular syndrome or ringbone.

Get a good farrier and side bone is easy to manage once initial lameness has subsided pm me if you want more details!

Oscar has sidebones on both front feet, We found out when he went lame just before the summer. we had to let them grow all last summer, using eggbar shoes, and was on bute most of the time.
In the autumn we started riding again and he is fine, we just have to keep an eye out for hard ground and just take our precautions. But we are back to normal now doing XC and everything
