My 16 year old thoroughbred cross had farrier today and the farrier thinks he may have sidebone. He's not at all lame, he's never been lame since I brought him 7 months ago, but the inside of his front shoes have been worn away quite badly.
He's never had back shoes on and I planned on putting them on anyway. He's now got a full set. The farrier said it might not be sidebone and could just be where he was putting more pressure on his front hooves as he was uncomfortable on his back.
Does anyone have an experience with this? I've looked it up and by the sounds of it my horse is showing none of the symptoms. Everywhere I've looked it said it was caused by lots of work on hard ground and I only ever ride in a ménage and round fields when hacking. Once again, he's not lame at all but just concerned as to what it could be.

Often sidebone can be painful when forming but doesn't always cause problems long term. If he's not showing any sings of pain I wouldn't worry too much. You can usually feel a lump where it's formed so if the only sign at the moment is wearing his shoes down more on one side it's either very early days or not sidebone. At 16 I would expect to start noticing little niggles.
