Are there any other forum members that ride sidesaddle, I'd love to see your pictures!

I have to admit I prefer SS to astride riding and feel more secure that way! I compete in ex racehorse and veteran classes sidesaddle on my grey mare, and my lifetime aim (having read Flambards at about 7yo) was to hunt sidesaddle and I now do that too on my mums cobby (much more comfortable than a TB!)

I have only been riding sidesaddle for a couple of years but it feels like a lifetime, and I'm so pleased I have taken it up, it feels like "how it should be"!

Please do share some more of your sidesaddle pictures!
(I think I have met a couple of forum members at shows around the area... you know who you are!!)

OMG, I would love to be able to ride side saddle. I did a few times years ago, and have been thinking about it lots lately. Have loads of questions though. I've just backed my 3 year old, how long does he need before introducing a side saddle, how long does it take to "get it", how expensive are they to buy,(I've started saving, but at the rate i'm going, it could be 5 years time before i can afford one, unless they'd take a trade in), and everything else i need to know. Your photos are fantastic, yuo look amazing, and the horse is fab too!!!

Ooo, ooo, another side saddle member!!! :D

I only ride aside now too, it doesn't b*gger up my hips and back and feels "right" too. Even Hattie goes better with a side saddle as well.

I'm currently not riding as I broke a rib when I fell off jumping with my off-side side saddle (long story, my fault!) but I should have a brand new shiny side saddle for Hattie when I return to riding at the end of October!!

Jumping on my off-side the day before I fell off! :P

:D yey
i really enjoyed riding my lovely old hunter ss and finally took up the courage to hunt him on my last day out with him before he went to the kennels. Boo hoo! Sadly i don't have any pics apart from a pastel painting a friend did for me which is actually very good and i was delighted to have it.

My next horse was just too high at 18.2, I couldn't even reach a gate, never mind undo it and he had a stride like a giraffe which catapulted me out of the saddle!!

Now i have a cob x tb who is currently too fat, but when i have managed to slim him down, i'll have another go! Can't wait!!
Kelo
nb and yes..... Flambards did it for me too - just get me Sweetbriar!

Don't have many on work comp. Have yet to get a day hunting sidesaddle, the chestnut won't hunt, and my coloured won't call a sidesaddle well- we will get there one day.

Ha! I see from your hunting pic that you've been indoctrinated by Ms Brown, now that could be dangerous (but fun :D )
I rode side saddle exclusively for 20 years due to a hip problem and must admit I had an absolute ball. It's on the back burner at the mo cos we've got an American Quarter Horse who is so tricky with saddles that Laura Dempsey banned me after the second attempt! But maybe in the future my new youngster will be suitable.
I was extremely lucky to be lent a selection of horses by the wonderful Roger Philpot and did everything side saddle - hunting, xc, team chasing, dressage...I also competed my previous quarter horse side saddle, although hunting was a bit interesting due to her ability for very rapid acceleration!
On Roger's wonderful cob Trevor I hunted for eight seasons with the Warwickshire. One highlight was being filmed by a Dutch camera crew, although it was a bit alarming when they tried to film up my skirt :)
I know what you mean about ' the way it should be' - I always felt like I'd ridden side saddle in a previous life....
I'm rubbish at posting pics but here's a couple of facebook links...this is the fabulous Reys Whoazanna, a reining bred quarter horse.

I've recently just bought a SS, so will hopefully have some not so elegant pictures then! lol!
All you're pictures are lovely :)

Haha! We are both Quorn subscribers and I always said before I'd even tried SS that it was on my thing to do before I die list...hunt sideways. That was opening meet last year and the first time the cob (stolen from my mother) had carried a sidesaddle! I'm not brave/mad/stupid enough to do what some of my sideways hunting friends do however, carefully selected mount as my mothers cob Does Not Jump!

I have just had a great day at Harroway stud with Lucinda Sims who runs an introduction to side saddle day and I am hooked! It was much easier than I thought and could nt believe how quickly we were cantering. Plan to have some more lessons while my horse is lame and then have a go with him. Have to say the reaction from others at my yard has been mixed!

Always wanted to give it a go :) Can you ride side saddle if you have a bad back?

Yes!! Infact, that is why I decided to go side saddle only due to my bad back and hip!!

fleabittengrey, were you at the Area 12 show at Moorelands in June? It was our first ever side saddle only show and Hattie did REALLY well, I hope to go back next year when we have some transportation sorted.

my sidesaddle is out on loan to an aquantiance for her impending wedding but once its back (oct/nov time) the new big girlie will be going aside, then i will be riding properly again rather than having the current 10 mins & have to be helped off beacuse my hip has ceased up or worse still dropped out of joint.

I must say that I am extremely disappointed that you side saddle people don't get dressed up in your finery every time you ride in your fancy saddles! It's somehow not so elegant when you're in joddies and boots :(

Very beautiful dressed up pics though, I am jealous! :)

Habits are seriously HOT to wear, mine is made out of thick wool so that you are drenched underneath it. I need to get a lightweight one but can't afford another so have to make do with one.
I like riding with an apron but I "outgrew" the one I used to use last summer (a lightweight tweed one) and haven't been able to find one that fits me within my budget (side saddle is expensive business unfortunately!).

The habit is comfy and warm on a winter's day though and I wore mine when all of us from the area, went on a Christmas hack last year. It was a good hack and we went to the pub after but I couldn't get off as I wouldn't have been able to get back on!!

jenhunt, have you contacted the Side Saddle Association, they will know who is in your area or know of who travels that may have saddles for you:

Many years ago I rode my Highland side-saddle. I've only got one picture and its hanging on the wall! I remember really enjoying it and doing a couple of small shows and even low jumps.
I also remember doing some sort of equitation class at Ardingly and all the other horses were delicate little Thoroughbred types who floated daintily above the ground and we came in and made the ground shudder! Still I consoled myself with the thought that Queen Victoria used to ride her Highlands side-saddle.
I would love to do it again as I often wonder if it would be easier on my back? The problem seems to be finding a saddle wide enough for the big cobs.

it is not the best but this was the first time my girly was introduced to the concept
