Having been away for over a week I was looking forward to riding my horse this morning. Said hello to her and gave her a fuss and then saw hair was missing under her chin....took a good look and she has a really nasty rub which has crystalised gunk on it - deffo caused from her drop noseband being too tight

It is v obv where I do up my noseband as it is the only hole that has been used on the noseband, and yes, it is loose, but it is only meant to be a *go no further* tool, not a *strap your gob shut* tool, as I think you all know, I am very anti strapping gobs shut - they are opening for a reason and it is up to the rider to sort out why and remedy it!

The thing that has really upset me/peed me off is that there was no note or communication from the rider telling me or apologising! YO said she has been going well - no suprise if she has been anchored shut, fact is I have been working for months for her to work WITHOUT resistance in the mouth - if you strap her up she leans, end of.

I ended up putting her out rather than riding as I want to talk to the girl first and find out what happened - yes I could have ridden her without a noseband but she looks sore and the last thing I want to do is punish her

I have paid £60 for her to be ridden and I feel as though I have been kicked in the teeth.

OMG...I'd be fuming!! It must have been VERY tight or she must have been really resisting to cause a sore...poor Porridge. Send her to me for my daughter...we'll love her

I will next time I go away! I cannot BELIEVE there was no note - if I had been the rider I would be absolutely horrified at what I had inflicted! When I cleaned her bridle the noseband has deffo been taken off at some point as it is a comfort bridle and the long straps had not been put back in through the browband, also her martingale has been taken off. It is going to be a while before I can ride in any drop/grackle now and I am so, so cross about it!

Poor P. Sounds mighty uncomfortable and nasty

Perhaps said rider hadnt noticed?? which makes it even worse in my eyes.
I am sorry you didnt get to go for a nice ride now your back

I too paid someone to exercise my horse whilst I was away a considerable amount of money, all I can say is never, never again. The rider concerned was a very good trainer but all I can say was that he wasn't the same horse that I left.

Now it doesn't matter what competitions I have coming up, if I have to go away , he has a holiday, its as simple as that.

Hope your mare heals quickly.

Will take a piccie later to show, as if it wasn't noticed I would be gobsmacked! I was totally gutted as I was really looking forward to a wizz around the farm but I just couldn't bring myself to even put a bridle on her

Poor Porridge, when are you going to catch up with the rider?

Tomorrow as she will be on the yard - I want to talk to her face to face about it, not over the phone...at least it will give her the opportunity to come to ME first, rather than vice versa.

I know how you feel. I've just been away for a week and in the end decided to let mine have the week off. Simply not worth coming back to the worry of what has been done.

I paid two people to do them morning and night and both wanted to ride but I said no thanks. And made sure my tack was locked up even though I trust both of them.

Both are happy and well and OK my mare was a bit of a jelly when I rode her for the first time, she's been lovely today after three days back in work. So unless I go away for a few weeks in the middle of the season (when I'll send mine to my trainer) they'll have holidays when I do.

Hopefully your horse won't have suffered any major after effects and, as my trainer keeps reminding me they are more forgiving then we are of 'mistakes'.

Normally I wouldn't mind about her having the time off, but she hasn't been *right* and I have been advised to ride her consistently to see if gaining some muscle tone back will improve matters and I didn't want to lose what we had started to regrow - I feel it would have been the lesser of 2 evils now though...don't you just love hindsight

Aw louise how frustrating for you - poor porridge - I've learned that if I'm ever away only certain people are allowed to ride H - it's just not worth the hassle having anyone messing things up - horses take a lot of hardwork and it can all be undone so easily - hope she mends quickly and doesn't feel too sore

Poor Porridge. I think it is quite hard to do drop nosebands up very tight and to think hers was tight enough to cause a sore. Hope you had a nice break away despite coming back to that!

ooops, poor P. It is a good thing that you are having a word with her as she needs to be made aware what she is doing. Perhaps she didn`t realise and is novice to these nosebands? Anyway, no excuse, I would also be so upset if I came home to that, esp having paid for someone to ride. You think that if you are paying, then they would be extra careful.
For everyone else thinking of going away, perhaps asking someone to lunge for 20 mins a day for a week? Done well, this would be beneficial for your return.
P must be glad to see you, knowing it will all be back to normal now.

Poor Porridge

Its obvious when you put a bridle on which hole the noseband/throatlash do up on. I would be very cross too. I hope shes better soon.

well poor pony, however it may not have been because the noseband was too tight, might just be that she didn't wash off under her chin properly after riding leaving gunk under neath to rub. just a thought, still not acceptable though as she should have done it anyway.
just a thought, about the building up muscle thing, i read a good article about lunging on a slight incline specifically to increase the muscle along the back, might be worth a try:)

Unfortunately we cannot lunge in the school and the fields are still too tacky to lunge in.

Just spoke to YM and she said that the girl flagged the sore up on Sunday as it was there then...will speak to her tomorrow about it but it is all v odd - YM said she has been riding her in my hackamore, but it is still in the drawer

Still, I would expect a note!!!

I'm not surprised you are fuming, it shows a lack of care and attention on the rider's part.

I had my horse on DIY a few years ago - But the owner did offer full livery. I said I would pay her a normal full livery rate if she could manage my horse whilst I was away. I think this was around £80/week some yrs back. When I got home (a week later) I had to spend a good couple of hrs digging all the crap and wet that had built up in my stable. When I went to collect my horse from the field (this was in July) he had NO water in his trough. His flysheet clearly had not been taken off once as it was black all over and ruined.
Maybe I am just conscientious but if I ever do any favours for someone else with their horse, I go over and above what is expected. The worst thing about this scenario was that they KNEW I was back at the yard and they still didn't think to cover up by at least filling the trough.

It's so hard finding someone you can trust, but I'd be inclined not to use this lady again??
